interview with From Ice To Fire

Have any of you played in other bands? Yes, everyone in the band has had previous experiences, but nothing out of the local context.

How is it that you started playing music? We started playing just for fun, playing only covers. Later things just got a little more serious, and we started to compose something by ourselves.

What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you?

Leonardo Lorefice, drums, 18; (Founder)

Samuele Pulino, rythm & lead guitar, 17; (Co-Founder)

Giuseppe Alfano, bass guitar, 18;

Vincenzo Abbate, rythm & lead guitar, 23;

Ivan, vocals, 22.

Have you had other previous members? Yes, before Ivan joined the band, we had another singer, called Dario.

Where are you from? We are from Modica, a little city located in the south of Sicily.

What year did the band form? The band formed in 2010, but started composing songs in 2014.

What's your style of genre? Our genre is a mix of Groove, Thrash and some elements of Heavy Metal.

What inspires you? Speaking of bands, we take inspiration from Pantera, Metallica, Sepultura, Deep Purple and Iron Maiden and outside of this, many artists Country, Progressive Rock, Indie Rock and more..

How often and where do you rehearse? We rehearse quite often in a rehearsal/recording studio located in our city, then it depends on the situation or rather, from the project in place.

How have you developed since you started with the music? We became more creative in terms of riffs and solos, the lyrics now talk of social problems and have a deeper meaning, and the style changed from an early Hard Rock/Heavy Metal to a late Groove/Thrash Metal.

Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? Just completed the new Album works, being in our opinion is the winning weapon, through a booking agency we could spread our Thrash and Groove along with our pumpkins.

Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? At the moment we are trying to auto-produce the second and debut Album. We will decide later, when we can have some feedback from the audience.

What made you decide to make this music? In the beginning, Hard Rock/Heavy Metal was the best choice, since we believed our town was not ready for something more Heavy. But later our taste changed, we tried to write something more powerful, and for now it’s working. We like it, and people seem to like it too. The beautiful part of this project has not only let you know, but it is also the experience itself, the fun and energy of the crowd.

What are your songs about? Our songs talk about social problems, the uneasy feeling towards them, and the rage of being tricked in a wicked society. In short, we criticize what we find wrong in today’s society: from consumerism to wars, from politicians to stereotypes.

Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? More often Samuele and Vincenzo give the first line of the song, after we compare and edit the parts all together, first with Leonardo and Giuseppe; just finished the instrumental parts we continue with Ivan to write text and metrics.

Do you start with the music or the lyrics? Music usually comes first.

Do you compose in a certain environment? We prefer a quiet environment to compose our music. Noise must come from us, not to us.

Have you done any covers live? Yes, mostly are covers of Pantera, Sepultura and Metallica, the rest of the ladder’s concert is from the EP and the extract song from the LP Album (Dated for the 2017).

What language do you sing in? Mostly English, but some songs are in Italian.

What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? The smallest crowd we ever had was formed by 8 people. The biggest by 600, six hundred entries at RIF – Rock Island Fest ( A festival organized by some friends of ours).

What ages are most of your concert attendants? The age of the people that attend our shows swings from 14 to 60, all beautiful people..

Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? We vary, most times we decide the songs that will be played a few minutes before the show.

Do you have a regular place you play live often? No, we continue moving and playing in different places

What was your first gig like? Well, we were very nervous, but in the end it was quite a satisfaction. The first time is never easy, in Music and also in love.

What was your latest gig? The latest gig we played took place September 13th in Piazza Matteotti (Matteotti Square). People enjoyed our show, and so we also did.

Have you had to cancel a gig? Yes, but it was never our fault. Usually clubs tend to forget when they book us a gig, and then we have to cancel it.

Where have you played live this year? We played shows in Noto (at Voodoo Rock Club - “Resurrection Night”), Marina di Ragusa (at La Palazzola Western Saloon – “Cowboys From Hell Night”), Catania (at Punk Cheers – “A Great Dose Of Groove”), Modica (at Piazza Matteotti; Auditorium – Rock Island Fest; Piazza Mediterraneo – Shouldercrusher Metal Fest) (..).

Where do you plan to gig the coming year? We will try to get some gigs out of Sicily and explore the possibilities our country has to offer us. It is the best and more classic way to make a reputation, and make people know you.

When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? We started to sell merchandise this summer (August). We have physical and digital copies of our recent EP “From Ice To Fire”.  For a short period, we have also used the t-shirt of the gang. but we prefer to wait a little longer ', together with the new Album are helping us on graphic works (the official logo and some artwork) by experts and likeable. This is again one of those occasions, as well as radio interviews: Thank you all, from our photographer of trust (Gaia's Portfolio) for new employees that we can not reveal to you, maybe next year!

Where can people buy your merchandise? Unfortunately, physical copies are available only for people we will meet playing gigs or that live in our area, but digital copies are available for download on Itunes, Bandcamp, Reverbnation, Amazon, Deezer, Soundcloud, Spotify and many other sites.

What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? We have these circuits musical handy now. Though not in practice, we remain of the opinion that the Original CD value and especially has its why. We understand the feeling..

How do you think the music industry have changed because of this?  we can mention the "web promotion", simply useful for a few reasons, but unfortunately and often exaggerated and unnecessary.

What do you think of my work? It must be quite cool to keep in touch with bands and share their stories. We have very much respect for your work. And we would also thank you for this opportunity you offer us to share ours.

Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? We think it’s easier to take inspiration in both older and newer bands, since our genre is still alive and kickin’ and expanded from the 80’s ‘till today. Some of the bands that inspire us are old, but also are still very active today.

What have been your biggest obstacles? We did not face very big problems, sometimes we just met incompetent people that couldn’t get their work done, or people promising something and leaving you like a poor asshole, waiting for news. We had to cancel our first tour for them.

What advice would you give other bands or artists? Don’t trust people easily, because the world of music is rough these days. Be strong, believe in your dreams, and don’t give up but at the same time it is not even required to make music.

How do you get psyched for a gig? We don’t need to get “psyched”. The thought of playing in front of people makes us happy and cheerful most of the times. Anyway, to get in the right mood we listen to some music, maybe drink something and throw jokes around. We also like to help setting the stage up.

Do you have any new material? We are currently working on the songs for our debut Album, so yes!

What are your web sites? Our website is reachable at the following address: http://from-ice-to-fire.webnode.it/

How can people reach you? People can get in touch with us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/FromIceToFireBand/) , Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkr8O5MTDM3SQcgnCJ8nXMA), Soundcloud, Spotify and many other platforms.

What are your plans for the future? If everything goes in the right way, we’re going to release our debut Album next year, and in the meantime play some gigs around Italy, then who knows? ..Germany? It looks promising.

Do you have something to add? Be ready people, things are about to get interesting! Big up for Thrash and Groove Metal of 2017! Follow us, yet dates coming soon!
