interview with Cruel Face

Have any of you played in other bands? yes. i played in some others like WARHATE, CRUEL FACE, FDS, SPITBLOOD, HELVETIN VIEMARIT, ACAO DIRETA, ASTERDOM and ROT. today only in ROT  and CRUEL FACE

How is it that you started playing music? listening to music... i wanted to try to make music too. and play the ones i enjoyed. Still trying to learn how to do it. 

What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you? in ROT we are: mendigo ( guitar 43 ), henrick ( vocal 26 ), alex ( bass 46 ) , emiliano ( drums 33 ), felipe ( vocal 35) in CRUEL FACE we are edu ( drums 44 ), lalo ( bass 42 ), alex ( guitar vox 46 ) 

Have you had other previous members? in CRUEL FACE marcao and galo - ROT were too many to mention them all but the last time we changed line up we were, marcelo and marcolino on vocals and rafael on drums , they left the band + mendigo and alex

Did you make music even when you were young? started w/ 14. experiences w/ accoustic guitar. and 2 years later electric one. 

Where are you from? i live in santo andre, it´s a city in sao paulo state that stays in brasil, it´s a industry part of sao paulo. 

What year did the band form? ROT - 1990 - & CRUEL FACE 1996

What's your style of genre?
ROT GRINDCORE - oldschool. little bit sludgy and crusty but mostly grindcore oldschool. 

CRUEL FACE CRUST GRINDCORE - little bit more metal riffs on the grind tunes and still crust / hardcore fast tunes. 

What inspires you? music, art in general, what happens around me... too many things can inspire me, the sound of a bus engine, poems, wind, factory. everything can become music. at least for me. 

How often and where do you reherse? usually every week. we have some friends that rent rooms so we use those.

Do you have other interests of work outside the band? yes. to grow food and live in the country side

Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? i´m a label too BUCHO DISCOS and always search for cooperation to release, new bands and my own. cruel face is looking for a label or various labels to release a split 7" w/ GURO. another brazilian band. really good stuff. 

What made you decide to make this music? joy!!! it makes me feel awesome. 

What are your songs about? social unjustice, rage, mind disturbance. 

Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? everybody does something. it´s free to make it good for eveyone. usually music i do in cruel face and help something w/ arranging some stuff in rot. 

What language do you sing in? portuguese and english

What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? least one / a couple of times w/ rot 700

Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? we make like that. for some time, like one year or less we play the same set so it´s easyer to put or take off any song and make new ones. then we change couse it´s good to change.

What was your first gig like? full of anxiety and fun

What was your latest gig? w/ CRUEL FACE masters of noise fest at ZAPATA club in sao paulo city - december - and w/ ROT WAS at ROCK TOGETHER studio/bar - january

Have you had to cancel a gig? yes! it´s sad. and happened not only once

Where have you played live this year? ROCK TOGETHER studio bar

Where do you plan to gig the comming year? there´s not really a plan. wherever we´re asked to . if it´s possible we want to go. 

When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? started as soon as we had a demo out. then tshirts and so on. now we have t-shirts, tapes, 7", cds, pins and patches.

What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? it´s their choice. i like to have the album. some people just don´t . 

How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? they had to adapt. now they charge on line for better quality. and have to put bands to play live to try to sell merch and not just albuns. there are many other ways to sell the band... pins, pathces, sk8 boards, beer and so on. 

What do you think of my work? journalism... cool. sounds interesting. but this one you should answer.

Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? from both cases. 

What have been your biggest obstacles? lack of money to make somethings, envy from others, and stupid things i shouldn´t have done or things done to me that made some of my plans ruined

What advice would you give other bands or artists? make w/ pleasure  whatever you are doing.
