Interview with Elder King

Have any of you played in other bands? Yes, most of us. The only member who hasn’t played in any previous bands is the bassist.

How is it that you started playing music? Well, each one of us has a different story, but we all started pretty early in our lives, around 14 years old. I guess only Tomate and Zet started before that with 12 years of age

What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you?

Bah Poeta – Vocals – 24
Cola – Drums – 24

Tomate – Bass – 22
Zet – Rhythm Guitar - 22

Rick – Solo Guitar - 21

Did you make music even when you were young? Yes, we used to play even when we were younger, but not together.

Where are you from? Brazil

What year did the band form? We started at the end of 2015, but it wasn’t until the middle of 2016 that we began this formation.

What's your style of genre? Our main genre is Hard Rock, but we mix with progressive metal and heavy metal. Each member has a different influence and that’s the most amazing thing about us, you can feel each one’s personality in every song we play.

What inspires you? I guess every one of us has different influences, but we have always had the same purpose as it relates to the content of the songs.  Talking about people’s behavior, the changing of the world, respect, helping each other and most of all making people think about their actions, encouraging them to change or take a chance.

How often and where do you rehearse? Twice a month

How have you developed since you started with the music? I believe the more you play, the more you learn. We discovered a whole new world with the band. Now we are synchronized, we are speaking the same language. Every day it gets easier to makemusic. But of course, it gets even better with the time.

Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? Yeah, we have a tour manager here in Brazil, but anything that can help us internationally is welcome.

Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? Sure. I guess that we would love to have excellent opportunities a label offers and take our music to new horizons.

What made you decide to make this music? I guess for every one of us is the same answer: love. When you are a musician you just can’t stay away from it.  You can’t live your life doing anything else. It’s like everything you do pushes you into the music again. So Zet and I started this project thinking about making the dream come true, and so it goes since then.

What are your songs about? The song themes range from daily subjects to internal conflicts, and even some criticismof politics and corruption, without getting attached to a single line of creation.

Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? Rick composes most of the songs, but every member in the band contributes to the process. I (Bah Poeta) write the lyrics.

Have you done any covers live? Only with other bands. Elder King was made with the purpose of playing our own songs and expressing our ownthoughts.

What language do you sing in? English.

What ages are most of your concert attendants? It goes from 18 to 40.  It really depends on the place we are playing, but most of the public is between 18  30years old.

Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? Currently we are playing the songs of our recently released album “This Country is Mine”.

Do you have a regular place you play live often?Currently we play at different venues.

What was your first gig like? It was in a bar here at our hometown and it was amazing! There was like a hundred people there and there was a lot of friends among them, I guess it was the most amazing fact about that show, everybody was so excited for our first show, most of them already knew our songs and sang with ut.We were nervous but we were so ready for it. I could feel the energy of everybody watching us.

What was your latest gig? We played in a festival with bands of different genres in our hometown of Sao Jose do Rio Preto. It was great!

Have you had to cancel a gig? Once, because of a health issue of one of the members.

Where have you played live this year? With the last preparations for the album release we’ve been really busy, but we are preparing for a lot of shows this year.

Where do you plan to gig the coming year? We plan to tour around Brazil this year and maybe a few shows in other countries.

When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale?

As our first album is ready to be released, we are working on our products to be sold with the album like t- shirts, guitar picks and a lot of great stuff.

Where can people buy your merchandise? We are working on our websitewww.elderking.com. Soon you’ll be able to find everything there. Stay tuned!

What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? Well, of course the sales of cdshas totally decreased, but we have to accept that streaming is the future of every kind of media. It’s a little sad cause we lose all the romanticism about going to a record store and seeing everything that’s out there. But there’s the bright side that is that it is so much easier to take new kinds of bands to people who can’t even imagine you exist. Online media makes it so much easier to disseminate our work and make a band global. There are always two sides to it.

How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? Of course I think that musicians have more opportunities now and they must think about people being able to listen to your music in every place of the world. I believe that it was harder before this technology.

What do you think of my work? I think that you give an opportunity to new bands, for people to meet them. I hope we can achieve some new fans with this opportunity.

How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? I’m sure it will get different people to know us besidehelping us with our global presence.

Do you have any role models or idols? I guess every one of us has different idols, but we are always inspired by great musicians who came before us and made history with their music.

Why do you think that they exist? Every musician works really hard to be somebody and make theirs’ a successful journey. I believe that every one of them was talented and worked really hard to get there. We all need idols; the human being always needs someone to look up to.

Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? From older bands, especially because of our genre.

What have been your biggest obstacles? In our country the biggest obstacle is trying to be part of the media. People prefer other genres here so we have to focus on people in other countries and try our best to get there.

What advice would you give other bands or artists?

For those starting: Don’t give up.
Fothose already big: Always think about how your influence can affect people’s lives before you say anything. It’s a great responsibility.

How do you get psyched for a gig? We try to get as calm as we can and always get in touchwith each other, trying to feel the connection we have for making music.

Do you have any new material? We’ve just finished our first album, so there’s a lot of new songs to hear. We intend to start working on a new music video, stay tuned!

What are your web sites? www.elderking.com

How can people reach you? Through our site and social networks like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter. We’ll soon release our album on 24 platforms like Deezer and Spotify.

What are your plans for the future? We intend to play all around the world, spread our music and always work on new songs. A band needs to keep on producing to keep itself alive!

Do you have something to add?

It’s been a pleasure to do this interview with you! Thanksso much for the opportunity!
