interview with Concealed in Clouds

Have any of you played in other bands? Yes, all of us have actually played in other bands before. Some more serious than others but we all have had a first taste of the band life with others previously.
How is it that you started playing music? Music has always been a form of escape from something. It's always been a huge interest of course, but it has also been a tool to help us escape from a reality we never were happy with. We wanted to be able to express ourselves with no limitations or shame, and that is the main reason most of us started playing music.
What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you?
Jonathan Clifford - guitar - 23
Alexander "Lex" Råberg - drums - 23
Benjamin "BJ" Jonsson - guitar - 23
Nicolas "Nico" Valdes-Sosa - bass and vocals - 24
Joshua Chittem - vocals - 24
Have you had other previous members? We did have a friend of ours play guitar with us when we started the band but have since 2016 parted ways with him. Still good friends tho.
Did you make music even when you were young? We think that most musicians that pursue a career in music, have probably (tried) to write a song or music when young. Almost all kids write or make up some kind of melody in their heads at some point. Just for fun and to have a giggle at least.
Where are you from? We are all from Sweden but we have different ethnical backgrounds.
What year did the band form? Concealed in Clouds as a band was formed in early 2014 but all of us have been playing together since around 2011 or something like that.
What's your style of genre? Contemporary metal/Contemporary rock. If it sounds good and feels good, we don't care how you label it. We just make music for the present, that can be listened to whenever and wherever, and that will still sound good in the future.
What inspires you? Anything and everything. Thoughts and feelings and emotions and sights and sounds and anything that makes a lasting impression on and touches you.
How often and where do you reherse? As often as we need to and in our hometown, Downpour City. Exact location is classified.
How have you developed since you started with the music? For the better. There's always this process you go through that in a way forms all of us as individuals in a band that we can't control. Development is indisputable and unstoppable for us, but we believe that however we develop, we do so gracefully, with elegance and class. We are definitely better composers and lyricists from much practice and we are more in touch with ourselves than ever before.
Do you have other interests of work outside the band? We all have our own ideas of what to do after the music or if things don't work out the way we'd like, but the main focus right now, and will be for as long as we want it, is the art.
Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that?We are always in the market for improvement, it all kind of depends on the deal. Our thoughts are that we want someone who is just as driven as we are and just as loyal as we are. Bold and cocky but with manners and integrity. We will try to find someone who is willing to see beyond what's trending in the industry right now and try to achieve something greater than just big bucks. We'd like to make an impact.
Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? Read the above and you'll get the general idea of what we are after with any label, manager, booking agency or any other firm dealing with bands. We want more than just music and we want someone who is just as hungry and driven as we are. What's the point in having a record label if they only work against you?
What made you decide to make this music? It felt good and sounded good and was something that we knew was truly from us. Not something designed for others but a representation of us, as a unit and in combination with everything that regards this band and its members.
What are your songs about? We try to write songs depending on what we have in your minds in the exact moment we write them. Some lyrics are more abstract than others and that leaves room for interpretation. It all really depends on what you are looking for in our songs, because one song can mean something completely different to me than it does to you. That's kind of the point with many of our songs.
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? We all pitch in to the composition in some way or another. Some of us contribute more to certain parts, whilst the others contribute more to the other parts. At the end of the day, regardless of who does what, it's a team
Do you start with the music or the lyrics? It all depends on who comes with the idea for a specific song first. Sometimes we only have what could be a chorus and start writing something out of that. While other times we have a finished lyrical idea and we write the song around that. For a lot of the songs on the album (in contrast to the EP, for example) the instrumentals came first and the lyrics were inspired by the feelings we got from the instrumentals. On other songs we'd use lyrics we'd previously written that we felt suited the song.
Do you compose in a certain environment? ,Lyrics can come to you anywhere at any time really, but the music is harder to compose without being at home or at band practice.
Have you done any covers live? Not as Concealed n Clouds but we did have a very popular version of The downfall of us all by A Day To Remeber back when we were younger.
What language do you sing in? English
What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs?Least; just the crew at the venue - Most; a couple of heads more.
What ages are most of your concert attendants? 18 - 30 we think. It's really hard to say because some suffer from having a severe touch of the baby face and some might just have a really good fake id.
Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? We switch it up a bit. There's a lot to choose from in our arsenal of massive hits.
Do you have a regular place you play live often? We try not to but some places have been the host for a couple of shows more than others.
What was your first gig like? Shit. Horrible songs, ghastly stage performance, crappy sound, bad lighting and we were very young and naive to the whole band thing at the time. But most band suck at first and we were no different.
What was your latest gig?We played Sticky Fingers in Gothenburg recently. It was a lot of fun with quite a decent amount of people, along with an awesome guest-performance from our good friend Joar from Dream Drop. It was fun.
Have you had to cancel a gig?We might have canceled a gig but that was a long time ago. We don't take gigs we can't come to - and if we're sick, we'll play anyway.
Where have you played live this year? Sticky Fingers, it's been a slow start this year due to the upcoming album.
Where do you plan to gig the coming year? Anywhere and everythere worth playing.
When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? We have not been that productive with the whole merch thing but we are currently talking about getting some and coming up with some designs for T's and canvas bags and some other stuff.
Where can people buy your merchandise? When we have some, we'll tell you.
What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? We think it sucks, but we understand it. Why use obsolete equipment? You're not exactly going to prance about with a freestyle like some pompous hipster. Spotify is there and it costs basically nothing to listen to the music and if you like it, support the band and buy it (off iTunes or something). Vinyls are coming back and that is pretty awesome, since you can't quite get the same feeling from a digital sound.
How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? A lot in a lot of different ways. Exactly how is a topic we could talk about for hours, so we'll stick to just saying that it's way harder to get paid as a musician now days.
What do you think of my work? It's awesome and fun and we are really happy to see that there still are some people out there who don't just listen to music but who live it as well. Keep it up!
How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? Hopefully it will give us more exposure and also give people an insight into the mind of our collective group. There is a lot to know about us, our way viewing art and our vision, so any chance to provide further insight to this is great.
Do you have any role models or idols? We have people we look up to but nobody we try to imitate or emulate. We aren't a product of someone else's endeavours and beliefs. We are our own and not a copy or product of anyone.
Why do you think that they exist? Role models are great for those who feel lost and need a guiding star. Sometimes people don't have the strength or intuition to act upon or seize life - it's great that there are people who can trigger motivation in others. We've all had these people, but right now, we're not in a place where we need it. At all.
Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? Both and neither. Inspiration comes to you whether you like it or not, you just have to choose which to act upon it and which one to just let be.
What have been your biggest obstacles? Financial struggles. Money is always the main reason we have struggles as a band. We can handle the rest with flying colours.
What advice would you give other bands or artists? Be you, don't be us, don't be your idols and don't be the idea or vision of others. Have the courage and will to be an original and if you're going to rip someone off, make it your own.
How do you get psyched for a gig? By listening to music, talking to friends and family, the occasional drink amongst other things. Also, the copious amounts of drugs helps a bit too... Just kidding. Not. ;)
Do you have any new material? Loads! Our debut album will be out pretty soon and it's packed with new tunes for the masses. Latest single 'Phenomena' is out right now, so go check that out!
