Interview with SKIN CULTURE

Have any of you played in other bands? SHUCKY MIRANDA: The SKIN CULTURE is a project formed by me in 2003 with the intention of always touring and recording with friends from other bands. 

How is it that you started playing music? Shucky: I started in 1990 with a band called Agression, but I never got lucky with the other musicians. They have always been problematic.  

What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you? Shucky: I'm 43 in March. Today, Dave Chavarri from ILL NINO, Christian Old Wolbers ex Fear Factory and Chris Towning ex Devil Driver accompanying me in the band.

Have you had other previous members? Shucky: Until 2010 we had a stable formation, but then each one went his way.

Where are you from? Shucky: I'm from Sao Paulo, Brazil, Dave lives in the USA but is Peruvian, the other 2 are Americans.

What year did the band form? Shucky: in 2003 in Mogi das Cruzes , Brazil.

What's your style of genre? Shucky: Our influences range from Thrash, Death Metal, Hard Core old school to Industrial, Djent.

What inspires you? Shucky Miranda: Max Cavalera, Steev Esquivel, Corey Taylor, Mark Hunter, Barney Greenway

How often and where do you reherse? Shucky : We just rehearsed before each tour, because everyone in the band is very busy with their other projects.

How have you developed since you started with the music? Shucky: There is nothing better than the road and the stages to learn.

Do you have other interests of work outside the band? Shucky: I also work as Tour Manager and music producer.

Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? Shucky : Today, the CIA Management is represented us in USA. I still do not have a position on their work, I hope to know soon enough.

Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? Shucky: This whole party that takes care of is Dave Chavarri, not worried about this. At the moment our focus is to be on tour.

What made you decide to make this music? Shucky: We do not choose the music, the music is who chose us.

What are your songs about? Shucky: On the lack of God in the heart, the human stupidity, by territories, wars by religion and power greed

Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? Shucky: Me.

Do you start with the music or the lyrics? Shucky: There is no rule, both ways.

Do you compose in a certain inviroment? Shucky: I write as soon as something interesting comes up in my head, there is no time or place.

Have you done any covers live? Shucky: I do not like to do covers, but sometimes we do some versions like Sepultura, Pantera, Beatles.

What language do you sing in? Portuguese, English, Spanish.

What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? Shucky: We had some good times, in Brasilia for 30,000 people on support for POD. In São Paulo we played in 2010 for 54,000 people, I think those two were our maximum. When we toured with KORN in São Paulo there were about 7,000 people, it was also very cool.

What ages are most of your concert attendants? Shucky: From 14 to 80 years, there is no rule. We want everyone to hear our music.

Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? Shucky: According to the public that we are going to introduce ourselves

Do you have a regular place you play live often? Shucky: The truth is that the circuit of shows in South America is small, usually in the same places as always. I hope to be able to expand from now on to other places like Europe and USA.

What was your first gig like? Shucky: SKIN CULTURE together with Sepultura at the Monsters Of Rock Festival in Argentina in 2007.

What was your latest gig? Shucky:  In December of 2015 like Headliner in Brazil, but before rolled a show where we were supports of the Hatebreed and Napalm Death in 2014. In 2016 I took vacations of one year of the band, and we are returning now.

Have you had to cancel a gig? Shucky: I believe 2 times, one with Ektomorf and another with Tim Ripper Owens. I do not know why.

Where do you plan to gig the comming year? Shucky: It will happen in May along with Universal Terror and maybe Ill Nino, I still can not say. It is quite possible that we will also go to Europe and USA.

Where can people buy your merchandise? Shucky: Usually during tournes, CDs, and t-shirts.

What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? Shucky: I find the download a great tool so that people can meet new bands, but the real fan will surely buy the physical.

How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? Shucky: Before the music industry was in untouchable hands, today the band has turned to its own industry.

How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? Shucky: Advertising is the soul of any business

Do you have any role models or idols? Shucky: My father and of course Jesus Christ.

Why do you think that they exist? Shucky: My father taught me what it's like to be a great man. And Jesus Christ taught me what love is.

Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? Shucky: I am inspired by what touches my soul and my heart.

What have been your biggest obstacles? Shucky:  Same as all musicians, money. Because music is an investment.

What advice would you give other bands or artists? Shucky: That no matter what they say, fight tooth and nail for their truth.

How do you get psyched for a gig? Shucky: Receiving the affection of the fans, the respect and recognition for my music.

Do you have any new material? Shucky: Yes, our last album MURDERNATION.
