interview with Sepolcral

Have any of you played in other bands? Yes, Alex (drums) played with DESPITE EXILE and toured with KRAMPUS. Dan (vocals) plays guitar with CHRONIC HATE .

What are your names?/ Who plays what?/ How old are you? Actually our line up is formed by Dan (vocals) , Cris (guitar), Fazz (guitar), Kev (bass) and Alex (drums).

Have you had other previous members? Yes, of course we had. The members have changed few times during 24 years. Actually Cris and Kev are the only members of the original band, established in 1993.

Did you make music even when you were young? In 1993 we met and started playing together to build up a death metal band, so we were all in teen.

Where are you from? We all live in Friuli V.G., in the north easter edge of Italy.

What year did the band form? We met for the very first time in 1992, we played live for the first time in a pub in 1993.

What's your style of genre? We always said we play simply death metal, we're bored about all those escatological definitions about melodic, technical, crust, epic, symphonic etc.... of course each song has some melodic riff, most of the patterns are technical, but that's simply a prerogative of death metal. We just write our songs in our way and call it death metal.

What  inspires you? Well, I don't think we can say that we're inspired by someone We fire up any idea remembering something we already heard. SEPOLCRAL is a jam of different members, the result (our music) is in fact inspired by ourselves. Obviously there are  common cliches related to the basical genre. The mean common inspiration is gore and violence.

How often and where do you reherse? We reherse in two or three different professional places actually. We meet once a week usually. Some times we meet at home to work on some new song or practice some new pattern.

Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? Of course we'll like somebody to find us serious chances of spreading our music ! Somebody caring about all that's around on playin' music, doing what we can't really do ourselves. Everybody can pay to play.

Are you looking for a label, and what's your thoughts around that? We're working on a full lenght actually so, of course we're looking for a label. There's so many “labels” around in this moment. Not everybody does exactly what he promised . So many times the difference between have a label printed on your CD and do it yourself is extremely thin, especially in this  web era. We would like more a foreign label, this time, so we can be a little bit more present outside Italy.

What made you decide to play this music? Since the very first day of rehersal we've been sure about what we wanted to play, DEATH METAL !! There wasn't many people listening to death metal at the beginning of the 90's where we live. Cris, Denis (vocals, died in 2011, R.I.P. Bro), G.M (drums 1993-1996) went to the same school and influenced each other with the extreme metal. I (Kev, bass) was a kind a punk searching for something really fast to play. The anger inside each one made the rest. Everybody in the band has to express himself to catch the heaviest and aggressive global sound.

What are your songs about? Basically in our songs we “talk” about religions, trying to desecrate'em in a gory way. Some songs are more about riot and protest, more punk if you want...

Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? Cris does the main part of composing since the beginnig of this band. As I said , everyone says his opinion and carry his ideas always. Cris writes a song and then we try it in rehersal room and work on it. I write most of the lyrics, then DAN works on 'em himself and makes us listen his vocal line for the song.

Do you start with the music or the lyrics? We always start composing the music, then I write the lyrics listening to the track.

Have you done any covers live? Yes, we did, especially in the beginning as all the bands in the world... We were used to play “Slowly we Rot” by Obituary for sure and Sepultura's “Troops of doom” has been in our live tracklist 'til 2015. At the moment there's no cover in our set.

What language do you sing in? We always wrote our lyrics in English.

What ages are most of your concerts attendants? We found with extreme pleasure people with different ages. There are young metalheads and old stylers. 18 to 50 years old true metalheads loving metal played live. It's really amazing in fact !

What was your first gig like? It was awful. We played shit at all, ahahah !!

What was your latest gig? Our latest gig has been really good. We had fun, all the audience had fun, we played a really powerfull set. It was a nice place with nice and passionate people attending in the middle of Friuli hills.

Where have you played live this year? We played in the north east of Italy. From Verona to Trieste through Treviso and Padova, Udine ….

When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? We started selling merchandise in 1994 I think. We always sold just t-shirts and CD's. We are looking for some good idea for merchandise. At the moment we're selling our T-shirt in two colors, black t-shirt white picture or grey picture. We also still have some of our very first demo “Witnesses of lies” 1994, cassette version. And our latest split cd “Reborn 6” 2015.

Where people can buy your merchandise? Of course the better way of buy our merchandise is coming at our shows. After that, you can ask with a message on our Facebook profile SEPOLCRAL. We will answer and relate very soon.

What do you think of my work? I think that in these days, the real music, played free of consuming clichés, needs people like you or some very good music can be lost forever. It's not about havin' success, it's about loving music. You love music forsure.

How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? I think that the only thing I'm sure about this interview is that some more people will know SEPOLCRAL outside Italy. And probably will open Youtube and search for our music and videos and I hope he/she will appreciate it.

What have been your biggest obstacles? When we started playng in 1993 in Italy  death metal was quite unknown. Where we live was totally unknown. That was our biggest obstacle, we must go far to record a cd, to find and meet labels and magazines and of course professional services live ! Actually is more difficult to have an establish line up.

Do you have any new material? Not so much at the moment. We already play live 4 tracks that will be in the album we're working on. A brand new video of the new track “Broken Armour” will be on youtube in july. After all we have 2015's “Reborn 6” and 1996's “Victims” on bandcamp.

What are your web sites? Actually you can find our videos on youtube writing simply Sepolcral, by the way, a brand new video is coming out on july 2017 for the new song “Broken Armour”. It's gonna be really smashing , check it out. Then we have a Facebook page of course and a bandcamp profile. Here's the address: https://sepolcral666.bandcamp.com/releases      https://sepolcral-official.bandcamp.com/album/victims  You can find there all our music including 1996's album Victims.

How can people reach you? The best way to contact us is through facebook. Just open our fb page and ask. We will answer as quick as possible.

What are your plans for the future? We're working on a new album and on our live show trying to give people as more as possible. We will be happy if we'll find chances to play outside Italy and spread our music. We're working really well and professional on every face of what's around our music and that's already amazing, so everything more is welcome.

Do you have something to add? Goodbye to all by SEPOLCRAL, Daniele v., Cristian g., Kevin b., Fabrizio g., Alexandar d.
