interview with The Silver Shine

What are your names? / Who plays what? Our upright bassist/singer name is Krista Kat, our drummer is Adam, my name is Ati EDGE and I play guitar and sign half of the songs.
Have any of you played in other bands? We still have side projects or other bands. Krista and me are playing in my solo project "Ati EDGE and the Shadowbirds" also. Our drummer Adam is playing drums in a rockabilly band "Naked Truckers". Before the Silver Shine we played in several bands.
How is it that you started playing music? I have been listing to music all in my life and one day in the middle of the 90's we just started a band with my friends and I choose to play bass guitar. After it I played drums in another band for 6 years and just picked up a guitar in 2004. I am playing guitars in The Silver Shine since then.
Have you had other previous members?
Yes, Krista is our 3rd upright bassist in the band. She joined the band in 2007. Adam is our 5th drummer and he joined the band at the beginning of 2016.
Did you make music even when you were young?
Yes, we did. Krista was learning jazz guitar when she was a teenager. Adam was learning to play drums since he was a little kid and of course he started bands with his friends when he was young. I have started my first band when I was 15 years old or so.
Where are you from? We are from Budapest, Hungary.
What year did the band form? We started the band in the Spring of 2014.
What's your style of genre? We call our music "vintage punk rock and roll". Some say it's kinda
punkabilly, or punk rock with upright bass.
How often and where do you reherse? Nowadays we are going the practice room only before tours or when we are recording a new album.
How have you developed since you started with the music?
Yes, we developed a lot since we started playing music. It's a long way and I it's like a challenge for us. We are trying to keep getting better and better from time to time, from record to record.
Do you have other interests of work outside the band? Fortunately I am taking care only the band. I mean I do the artwork for our CDs, LPs, shirts, etc. I do and edit our home pages, I write most of the songs, produce our videos, mixing and mastering our albums, etc. So I have all my interests of work inside the band.
Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? We just joined Subkultura Booking agency some weeks ago and they will take care of our shows in the future in Germany, Belgium, Czech Rep., Belgium, France, The Netherlands and Austria. In the USA we are at Naked Betty Booking and before we worked together with Torpedo Booking for several years in EU. In our first years we booked our shows ourselves but it's great that there are great booking agencies who take care of their bands and we are happy to work together this people.
Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? We are at Wolverine Records. It's a great punk rock / punkabilly label from Germany and we are satisfied 100% with their work. Our 9th record "Hold Fast" came out by this great label during the Spring of 2016 in CD and vinyl format. We just started working on our upcoming album already what hopefully will be out early 2018. Before Wolverine Records our first albums came out by Crazy Love Records, Longneck Records (it quit some years ago) and GrundRecords. All of them are/were hard working labels and we are still friends with those guys who run these good labels.
What made you decide to make this music?
Self-expression brought me here. I always liked this type of music and I wanted to be a part of it.
What are your songs about? We have songs about the struggle in everyday life, about human feelings, we have songs with criticism of our society, about the shortage of respect in our world….. about things and thoughts what surrounds us.
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics?
I wrote all the lyrics and music of our first 8 albums myself. But on our last album Krista helped me a lot with both writing the lyrics and music. She has a lot of good ideas and it was great to work with her on some songs.
Have you done any covers live? Yes, of course we did a lot of cover songs live but nowadays we play only 2-3 cover songs in a 15 songs set list. Even we put out a kinda cover album for our 10 years anniversary including 9 of our favorite songs… songs like 'Mercedes Benz'  from Janis Joplin, 'Reach for the Sky' from Social Distortion, cover songs from Ramones, Distillers, Muddy Waters, etc. Anyways one of my favorite cover song is 'Jolene' from Dolly Parton.
What language do you sing in? We do sing in English. We put out a Hungarian language album some years ago called "Megfakult képek" but we will keep on singing in English.
What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? Hmmm, the most is 2-3.000 people and the least is I guess nobody. We toured in the UK about 7 years ago and the promoter forgot to advertise the gig and nobody knew about the gig so nobody were there.
What ages are most of your concert attendants? I guess between 25 and 40. But of course there are younger people and older people on our gigs everywhere.
Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary?
We try to do vary our set list but if we go to a longer tour it's easier for us to play the same set list during the whole tour.
Do you have a regular place you play live often? No, we don't have. Lately we have been closing the year in the same club in Budapest for 4 years now but I can't call it is often.
What was your first gig like? We played our very first gig with The Silver Shine in a small club in the heart of Budapest at the beginning of 2005. But this club closed some years ago.
What is your next gig? We will be the support band of our friends "Nekromantix" on April 2. at A38 club in Budapest. We toured with them on our 2nd tour in the USA in 2013. Very great guys, good musicians and they play awesome music. We can't wait to be there already!
Have you had to cancel a gig? We are not that gig canceling type band but of course there were 1-2 gigs what we had to cancel during the band's 13 year.
Where do you plan to gig the comming year? In April we will play in Switzerland, we will have several festival dates in the Summer in Germany, Poland, Hungary and France. We will tour again in the USA for 8 weeks in September / October and we will
have a German tour at the end of this year.
What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records nowadays? Nowadays you can download everything from the internet. Everything is online. I have no problem with those people who download from Amazon or iTunes or another legal sites but I am angry when hackers put your album up and it's possible to download it for free. It kills the music industry and it kills the bands also. The bands pay a lot of money to record their albums and they hope the selling of albums will bring that money back…. and 5 days before it's release date some f..king, Russian hackers put it online for free. It really s.cks… I know …. it happened with us also several times...
How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? The music industry has changed and it's dying because of it. 20 years ago we bought a CD and we know all the songs from it. Now you can download 500 albums in 10 minutes for free. You can't select because there are too much information. The value of good music is less and less + I haven't talked about X-Factor what is the other worm to kill live music.
What do you think of my work? Fortunately there are magazines, online 'zines, etc. who promote good music. It keeps the good music alive. Thanks for your work!
How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? I do think every single interview helps the bands to reach bigger audience. Maybe only 1-2 new people but maybe 20 or 100 new people will like the band after an interview like this.
What advice would you give other bands or artists? Set some smaller goals to reach, like put out a new album, book a tour, etc. When you reached your goal, set another reachable goal. Nobody started as a big star. Even the biggest stars put a lot of time to their production.
Do you have any new material? Our latest album came out by Wolverine Records last Spring titled "Hold Fast". We released 3 video clips from the album and we are working on the 4th video clip what will be out this April.
What are your web sites? www.thesilvershine.com and we are on facebook also: www.facebook.com/thesilvershine
How can people reach you? They can find our contact on our webpage also and they can reach us on Facebook also.
What are your plans for the future? After Summer festival season we will do a 2 months USA tour, then a
German tour and after it we will finish the recording of our 10th album.
Do you have something to add? I just would like to say thanks, Robex for the interview! Keep up
the good work and I hope we will back in Sweden soon to play (we
played there about 6 years ago last time :) Cheeeeeeers!
