interview with Mywowkee
Have any of you played in other bands? Yes, we both played in other formations. Miky (our guitarist) has play as a bassist in many funk bands. Edoardo (the drummers) has play in many classic rock bands.
How is it that you started playing music? Michele had many music friends but was the last of them to start playing. His father played the bass, so he began, around the age of 18, to learn the electric bass. Edoardo started playing drums very early, around the age of 14, he was already very good and had a very powerful sound.
What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you?
Miky (Guitar/vocals), age 28
Edo (Drums), age 25
Did you make music even when you were young? We have always worked on our ideas since we were young.
Where are you from? We are from Rome.
What year did the band form? In 2015 -16 we began with duo project, in a first moment like a jam-band; we played in many clubs with instrumental performances. We spent a lot of time trying to give us our freedom in artistic creation.
What's your style of genre? Dirty-Funk? We love definitions, but we think it's nicer if someone define your music or your genre. It's like a joke, we play and people guess what we are playing.
What inspires you? It is difficult to answer this question. I would say, is a mix of sensations, memories, images. One of the greatest sources of inspiration are the anger and the sweetness that come when you move from the dirt of the city to the dark of the sea at night. All the memories which smell like people and the paranoia of your urban state of mind isolation.
How often and where do you reherse? It depends, when we started we were seeing it every day, lately we don’t meet each other regularly. On our own we always play and we organize a meeting when we have new ideas. It's important that there is some detachment, when you play too much together you risk getting into the loop. The distance favors new contaminations.
How have you developed since you started with the music? At the beginning we were interested only to develope the instrumental part of our music. Now, we discover the harmony of behind the vocal construction. We want to explore this new dimension of compose songs.
Do you have other interests of work outside the band? Edo works in a Higways Agency and with this job he can survive. Miky has a master degree in philosophy and he is a researcher. We love what we do. Outside the band, we care about everything we do. We like to understand the contemporary world, we spend a lot of time studying contemporary art and understanding new technologies and how they interact with art.
Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? At the moment we are thinking only at the music and the ways to play loud, fast and clearly like a crooked sky.
Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? Yes, we started to send our demo to label. We will see what happens!
What made you decide to make this music? Music maked the decision for us, we just decided how to run or how to speak with chords.
What are your songs about? Our music speaks of unforeseen events.
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? Miky writes all the songs and the lyrics.
Do you start with the music or the lyrics? Always with the music.
Have you done any covers live? Yes, Psycho Killer by Talking Heads, Hey Boy Hey Girl by Chemical Brothers, Purple Haze by Jimi Hendrix.
What language do you sing in? English.
What ages are most of your concert attendants? Normally our peers. But it often happens to find a generational mix. People of different ages seem to react well to live, or our music.
Do you always play the same songs do you vary? A concert is like a psycho-musical act, you can not just be play music. We always try to change the songs on stage. We kept the idea of improvising between one song and another.
What was your first gig like? Our first gig was in a place called Officina Belushi, during a festival close to Rome. It was great, maybe one of our best memories.
What was your latest gig? One months ago, before we started to record our EP. We played in a Laundry Room for a secret concert.
Where have you played live this year? At the moment we're planning our tour, because the EP is coming out. Maybe in the next two months, we will announce the tour dates.
When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? We'are preparing vinyls and supercool cotton bags.
Where can people buy your merchandise? They can buy our products at concerts or write to our mail address : [email protected]
What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? Today the concerts are fundamental for an artist. We do not judge who downloads the music. In the end we only care that someone can listen our music.
How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? The music industry wants to make money as it was in the past. Today it matters more to have like on facebook than how a band really play.
What do you think of my work? We read many music magazines, the work of the journalist is crucial because it presents to the listener a musical selection, the result of a search for his own discovery.
How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? The magazines can influence the perception of the possible listener. They play an important role and often decide the fate of the music market more than it may seem.
Do you have any role models or idols? Yes we have a lot of idols. Miky loves : Nuno Bettencourt, Jaco Pastorius, John mayer, Jimi hendrix. Edoardo: John Bonham, Chad Smith, Ian paice, roger waters.
Why do you think that they exist? Because someone has to give the right direction.
Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? It's easy to copy old bands and mimic to be active today.
What have been your biggest obstacles? Ourself, our only obstacle
