Have any of you played in other bands? For me and Juliana, Antidemon was always our only band.Marcelo Alves (guitar) is a Musician graduated from University and teaches music in many schools and participates in many activities in this area and he has participated in many bands.
How is it that you started playing music? It played percussion in an orchestra, but metal, Death Metal ... Grind Core ... it was even with Antidemon almost 25 years ago.
What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you? I am responding to this interview. My name is Batista and I'm 50 years old (Bass and Vocals), Juliana (Drums) and Marcelo Alves (Guitar)
Have you had other previous members? Yes ... In these almost 24 years of Antidemon ... We had other members, mainly in Guitar.
Did you make music even when you were young? I always did music with Antidemon, before I played percussion in an orchestra.
Where are you from? I was born and raised in the city of Osasco, State of São Paulo, which is a region of Southeast Brazil.
What year did the band form? Antidemon was formed in January 1994, and never stopped! They are almost 25 years without interruption.
What's your style of genre? We can say that we predominantly play Death Metal and we have Grind Core passages ... So we say we are a Death Grind Core band.
What inspires you? The truth naked and raw, without masks or illusions! Tell the world that we are all free and never manipulated! I feel inspired to know that I was created by God to do this, so I want to donate my life to it! These things inspire me!
How often and where do you reherse? We try to rehearse at least once a week in the city of São Paulo in a rented studio and in our house for compositions several times a week, when possible.
How have you developed since you started with the music? The more we play the more we develop! I believe it's an obvious issue if you love what you do! If it is something by obligation or imposition there is no development ... But if it is done with love and dedication to evolution happens every day. Another factor that is wonderful to notice the evolution are the recordings of a band over the years! Then you can tell! I learned to do ... I learned singing and playing and playing ... I never had a teacher or school. So did our drummer Juliana ... She sat down for the first time on the drums four months before doing the first show with Antidemon ... Before I had never played ... and from here to here, in those 11 years I can see its growth, evolution, speed and endurance every day more.
Do you have other interests of work outside the band? My wife and I, Juliana, (Antidemon Drums) are leaders of a community called CRASH CHURCH in the city of São Paulo. There we do shows of all styles of metal and hard core, we support the bands and everyone who is involved with this culture. In this community the entrance to the shows is 1 kilogram of non-perishable food to help the poorest and most needy people in our city. We also take care of alcohol and drug addicts who are struggling to break free and reintegrate into their families and into society. I am also a plastic artist ... Seeing my works that help me in our livelihood. Check out this link: https://www.facebook.com/artsbatista
Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? We always organize our Tours, but it is always very good to have a Booking Agency that can work in partnership with our Gigs and Tours agenda.
Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? We recently completed a good contract with the VISION OF GOD RECORDS American Label. They are re-releasing our old albums with a new layout and also making new releases such as a live DVD that has just been released and the fifth Antidemon Album that will soon be recorded.
What made you decide to make this music? This song and this style came in my heart and feeling very naturally to me. I understood that doing this would be one of the most important things in my life. I felt like God Himself was leading me to it.
What are your songs about? We have 04 albums released and we are composing our fifth album! We already have over 50 Antidemon songs.
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? Most of the time we build the Music and then come the lyrics ... But in some compositions comes everything together and with great force! Lyrics and music! And we can know that it will not just be a simple composition ... But something that will draw attention and please us and our audience.
Do you compose in a certain environment? The compositions are born in the most unusual places ... Sometimes in the middle of the street comes a spectacular riff and we have to record on the cell phone immediately so as not to forget. Other when we are playing our personal instruments ... Still others when we are rehearsing with the band.
Have you done any covers live? We are launching in this year of 2017 by "Vision of God Records" of the United States our first DVD and CD to Vivo, that had been recorded in a presentation ours, in the city of Santigo of Chile.
What language do you sing in? Singing in Portuguese, English and Spanish.
What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? We have already played for 10 people in a small bar and also for over 5,000 in other events.
What ages are most of your concert attendants? Our audience is quite variable! We have actually witnessed three generations of the same family in our presentations ... Grandmother, Father and Grandchild who really love our music. For being a band of almost 25 years, it is common to find fans who tell us that they were born listening to our music, because their parents liked Antidemon and they learned to like it too. This is really very gratifying for us. But the average age of the people who go to our shows is 26 years.
Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? We have more than 50 songs recorded ... But we always have to play certain songs that have become the preference and our fans demand it! Obviously we always present new compositions before we even record them in a new album. But out of respect for our audience we have a list that we know we should play, Especially if we've never played in that city or country or if we've been there for a long time.
Do you have a regular place where you play live often? No ... We're always playing in new places! Maybe the invitations are always varied ... But there are festivals that we have played 5 times like the FREAKSTOCK FESTIVAL in Germany.
How was your first show? I was 38 degrees fever, very cold, with a sore throat and no energy at all ... But when the time came, I did not know what was going to happen on the stage and started to do everything very willingly ... I did not stop for a second, banging my head, banging, screaming a lot, and getting people to be attuned to what I was doing. When that first performance was over I was totally healed! It was an incredible experience that makes me even take the stage even when I'm sick.
What was your last show? It was in the city of Rio Claro - São Paulo - Brazil.
Did you have to cancel a show?
Yes ... Sadly it happened two or three times because we could not get to the place.
Because we do not have transportation conditions to the City or Country.
Once, because of a swine flu epidemic that was happening in Mexico, we had to cancel a whole tour of the country, and fulfill that agenda months later.
Where did you play live this year? Yes! We started with a tour in Cuba, the first socialist country we introduced ourselves, and then followed with several presentations in Brazil.
Where do you plan to attend next year? We really want to do our first season of shows in the United States and we can respond to the invitations we have received to be in countries with Indonesia and India. In addition maybe to happen our sixth season in Europe.
When did you start selling merchandise and what do you have for sale? The first thing Antidemon sold, was their T-shirts with the Band logo. Then came the demo tapes (K7), and soon the 4 albums that we have already officially released. Now we are always selling many T-shirts, the 04 Albums released, Dvd's, buttons and stickers.
Where can people buy their merchandise?
Directly with us by email: email@example.com or our fanpage: https://www.facebook.com/ANTIDEMON.OFFICIAL/
Or by our label:
"Vision of God Records": http://visionofgodrecords.com/
What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? Obviously this causes a lot of damage to the bands and it becomes difficult for labels and labels to invest in new bands. Anyway ... Complicates for everyone. But at the same time many people end up knowing the work of so many bands that would remain all their existence in anonymity. I also have to admit that those who really like a band, run after and try to get the original album and pay for it like the old fashion. This is a small consolation that encourages us to always continue to sell our albums.
How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? Before selling less the Music industry had to adapt, the Bands had to adapt. A band with this situation can never stop trying to have a good schedule of live shows to make up for it all.
What do you think of my work? It's great to see how you work with so many different bands, giving everyone opportunities as well! It's great to have a tool like your Blogg, especially for the great mass of the underground of Heavy Metal and its strands! It was also very interesting to be interviewed by a journalist who really knows how to get the best out of her interviewees as thought-provoking and intelligent questions. Here from Brazil our admiration and our sincere thanks for your work.
How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? In this long walk, we know that all of the interviews that we answered were very important, because we are reaching them with new people, who may not have known us or have not heard from our work for a long time. We really value being interviewed by You and we are sure of the return of your readers.
Do you have any role models or idols? I very much believe in the need to have people who are the benchmarks for our path! Those who have already crossed the same path and have made a difference! These people can be rather referential and role models to follow.
Why do you think that they exist? Precisely because they inspire by the excellence with which they have made their careers and indicate that it is possible to go ahead despite the limits that our existence imposes on each one in a different way.
Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? It is possible and easy to draw inspiration from great talents of the past, but you should not close your heart to the new talents ... A child can inspire and even teach an elderly person full of experience.
What have been your biggest obstacles? Financial obstacles have always been great, but we always try to ignore them. Doing what we have to do by having resources or not having resources ... One way or another. The other major obstacle was being and doing something that I was not. I started with this band without knowing anything of the style.
What advice would you give other bands or artists? Believing in your own work is something you need to take the first step. Persevering in believing is the second step! Believing when everyone doubts is part of the third step forward.
How do you get psyched for a gig? Yes ... Being excited for a presentation with Antidemon is something that has to be commonplace and natural for us band members! If this does not happen, we have to immediately review things and shake ourselves up and confront ourselves and then resume with more passion what we are doing.
Do you have any new material? As I mentioned in some questions above, we have a DVD and CD recorded live in Chile, which is being released this year.
What are your web sites?
How can people reach you? The best way is even our email: firstname.lastname@example.org
What are your plans for the future? We want to record our fifth album as fast as possible and continue to do what we like most in the four corners of the planet, which is to play ... to play and to play!
Do you have something to add? Thank you for this incredible opportunity! Thank you Robex Lundgren for the interview and the super interesting and original questions. I know you're from Sweden! We hope to return to your country soon! We performed in the beautiful city of Örebro in 2005, but we want to return to a larger sequence of presentations. We hope to have made us acquaintances with many new people! Thank you all for this valuable time we were given to get to know more about Antidemon and our things.
