interview with So Does Your Mother

Have any of you played in other bands? For someone it has been the first experience in a band excluding experiences as solo artist or as orchestra/big band member, but for the majority of the band, So Does Your Mother is one of several experiences in a band.

How is it that you started playing music? We started to play together for fun because it was a period when we were free and strangely without any musical project so we formed a small 5 members band that with the years, with members going and members coming arrived to 9 members.

Yes the band started with Lorenzo on voice and a different guitarist, Francesco Fusco, that left the band to go to the Berklee College and study guitar and music production. In the early years there was a different bass player, Federico Marrama, but left the band before the first record. And last member that has to leave us is our clarinet player Letizia Lenzi, that decided to continue her musical career as a pianist.

Did you make music even when you were young? Many of us started to make music during their childhood but everyone started to study and make music during high school.

Where are you from? We come from Rome (IT)

What year did the band form? The band was born in 2012
What's your style of genre? Progressive Rock Dance

What inspires you? We are greatly inspired by Frank Zappa and his peculiar music style. We are also influenced by King Crimson, Talking Heads, Nile Rodgers & Chic, Funkadelic, Chemical Brothers.
How often and where do you reherse? We rehearse on average 2 days a week but most of the time we add extra rehearsals to work on new things.
How have you developed since you started with the music? We rehearse a lot to know every detail of our songs. We played covers to know better how we play together and then we had an intense concert experience to improve the show and the confidence with each other.

Do you have other interests of work outside the band? We are all friends and except music, we share other cultural aspects such as movies, art and theatre.

Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? We had an horrible experience with an italian booking agency, who took our money and in more than a year of work didn't find us even one gig. We are burned from this experience but we could be still interested.

What made you decide to make this music? We decide to make this music in order to express our voices and our musical passions, convinced that there are no boundaries between genres.

What are your songs about? Our songs desire to tell how we see the world and what we are against. Sometimes they could appear only as funny stories but behind the laughs there is more.

Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? Mainly Lorenzo. The lyrics are all his and the music is mainly composed by him but all the members works on developing Lorenzo's ideas and also bringing their own.
Do you start with the music or the lyrics? It depends, sometimes the music come first and then the lyrics is attached but it happened that was the lyrics to inspire the music.

Do you compose in a certain inviroment? Mainly home for the riffs and then in the studio for the structure of the song. There is no specific place were an idea can come but every idea has to be confirmed in its value when we are in the studio.

Have you done any covers live? Yes, we like to rearrange some Zappa songs and also some dance songs from the 90's

What language do you sing in? We sing in English even if we have a song in Latin.

What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? We don't know it depends on the city and the venue.

What ages are most of your concert attendants? Between 18-35 years old.

Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? We use to play all our songs and we change the pair of covers that we do.
Do you have a regular place you play live often? No we move around Rome and Italy

What was your first gig like? In really cool venue called "Contestaccio", we where really young and dressed as women.

What was your latest gig? In a small club and the band was split between two levels. At first we were scared but it has been a great show and we had so much fun.

Have you had to cancel a gig? Yes it happened due to illness of one of the memebers.

Where have you played live this year? We had the chance to play in many festivals and clubs around Italy

Where do you plan to gig the comming year? We are going to play on Easter Monday in London and then we don't know, we are planning the new album and to play in some cool venues around Europe.

When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? As the project started to breathe and play we decided to sell our merch, mainly composed by various T-shirts and our cds.

Where can people buy your merchandise? People can buy our merchandise at our concerts or writing us on [email protected].

What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? The legal download is the normal symptom of the progress. We all like the Cd or the vinyl as objects but the music industry decided to prefer streaming and download. People mainly listen to music through Ipods and smartphone. Computer and cars don't have anymore the Cd reader and everything goes via bluetooth. The future of music is virtual but the value of a good artwork printed on a vinyl or a Cd booklet will always be a different and priceless thing.

What have been your biggest obstacles? he ugly people that want to take only money from the artists.

What advice would you give other bands or artists? Believe in your music and try to make a good network between other bands around the world in order to exchange experiences and gigs.
Do you have any new material? We are working on new songs.
