interview with Last Battle
Have any of you played in other bands? We all have played in various local bands. They were all different experiences that help shape us be the band that we are today.
How is it that you started playing music? Skipped school one day, and bought a guitar. Started learning the album Nevermind from Nirvana, and that was it from there.
What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you? Justin - Singer/Guitarist, Jeremy - Bass, and, Pony Boy - Drums. We are all in our twenties.
Did you make music even when you were young? We all started playing music when we were around 12-14 years old.
Where are you from? We are from San Antonio, Texas, USA
What's your style of genre? We are an Alternative/Metal Rock, with a pinch of grunge, and some post hardcore elements.
What inspires you? Most of the songs write are really personal, just life experiences. Some of our newer songs that we are writing are not so personal, I've been reading a lot more books and seeing a lot more movies, we will see how that comes into play.
How have you developed since you started with the music? I can play more than 3 chords on the guitar now lol. I try to learn different things and tricks to add into my arsenal. It's keeps music interesting for me.
Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? If we can find the right one for us, then sure, we would give it a shot. I think if you find the right booking agency that fits what you want to do with your band, then by all means go for it. You just got to be careful who you're dealing with, there are a lot of scams, screwing out a lot of good bands, and people trying to take advantage of newer, younger bands, that haven't been in this industry that long.
Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? No, not really looking, but, if the right one came along, then sure, I'd love to be a signed band. These days though, you really got to be putting in the effort yourself and doing a lot of grass roots and if you can make a name for yourself before you even get to that label stage, I think that's even better. I think bands need more of a solid distribution company behind them these days, since there are so many platforms to put your music on.
What made you decide to make this music? Fate? I listened to a lot of Alternative rock bands growing up, but as a teen, I liked the heavier stuff to. I thought, maybe we should just fuse all of these things together and see what it makes.
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? Well I write all the lyrics, I used to write all the music, but, now it's more of a group effort. That totally works for me, cause it's stressful trying to write songs all the time by yourself. lol
Do you start with the music or the lyrics? Music first. Always.
Do you compose in a certain inviroment? Not really, we have our rehearsal space. Sometimes we will change lighting and that helps lol.
Have you done any covers live? We've done a few Nirvana, Chevelle, Thrice, covers live.
What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? I think it's great to get the music out, but, it kinda sucks, you really got to play a lot more to cover for that loss. It's all good to me though, I care more about the music.
Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? It really depends what you're into, I like a lot of older bands, but I also dig a lot of new bands from today. It all depends what catches your ear, but in all honesty I think it's best to keep an open mind.
What have been your biggest obstacles? Money and time
What advice would you give other bands or artists? Play with passion and heart. That will translate more than trying to sound perfect every night.
How do you get psyched for a gig? A nice meal and a nap haha. The adrenaline always hits right before we start.
Do you have any new material? We do! Some of the heaviest stuff we've ever done.
