interview with Mr. Feeling

Have any of you played in other bands? Yeap, actually all of us have a long history in music.
How is it that you started playing music? The band really started in to early 90s with a different line up and playing own songs in English in Brazil. I’m the founder and the only original member nowadays. I basically wanted to make hard/heavy/progressive music and was looking for guys in my area who wanted to do the same and were really into it.
What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you? Our current line up is: Anely Mell (lead vocals/keyboard - 31); Marcos ADA (guitars/backing vocals - 46); Gabriel Coscarelli (bas/backing vocals - 30) / Luciano Dias (drums & percussion/backing vocals - 38)

Have you had other previous members? Yes, the band has changed its line up.

Did you make music even when you were young? All of us have always been involved with music somehow ever since. In my case, for example, since I was 5 I used to play imaginary guitars kkkk.
Where are you from? We’re all from São Paulo state, Brazil.
What year did the band form? Circa 1991
What's your style of genre? We play hard rock with some influence of pop, heavy, progressive & Brazilian music mainly, but we all have a lot of influences.
What inspires you? Life situations, personal interesting and relevant events, etc.
How often and where do you reherse? We often rehearse at studios in our area, but we intend to build up a home studio at my new home very soon.
How have you developed since you started with the music? Well, I guess we’ve always been looking forward to making better and nicer music by practicing a lot, listening to new music a lot and being open for new ideas in music and our instruments.
Do you have other interests of work outside the band? In Brazil unfortunately making a living only with music is extremely hard, so all of us have some other jobs. I’ve already had a music studio and like very much music production, audio/guitar equipment a lot.
Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? In fact it’d be great to have some support in this field and it definitely sounds interesting.
Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? Nowadays I must confess I’m not sure how interesting it can be, but we’re always open to hear proposals.
What made you decide to make this music? We’ve always enjoyed hard/heavy/progressive and rock music in general, even though these are not styles which are in the mainstream these days.
What are your songs about? Our songs mix different topics, since events in life, personal experiences, world interests etc.
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? In early days I used to everything, but nowadays our singer Anelys also brings some music ideas & lyrics.
Do you start with the music or the lyrics? Some songs come up kind of entirely at once, others come first with melodies. rarely we start with lyrics before melody & harmony.
Do you compose in a certain inviroment? Nope, we do it everywhere.
Have you done any covers live? Yeap
What language do you sing in? Some are in English, some in Portuguese.
What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? Well, we have already played for all kinds of audiences, since 100 people to 10,000 along all the band’s history. Recently among 200 to 1,200.
What ages are most of your concert attendants? We can see people of all ages in the audience, depending on the place where we’re playing, since early teens to old rock’n’rollers in their 50s!
Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? Our repertory is pretty big and even our own songs we try to vary from concert to concert.
Do you have a regular place you play live often? Some pubs, nightclubs and festivals often call us to play as we usually take such a good audience with us.
What was your first gig like? Well it’s been quite long time, but I remember it was reasonably good, as we’d rehearsed a lot and we’ve been really hardworking regarding to performance ever since.
What was your latest gig? Our last one was pretty good, despite the P.A. system which was pretty noisy.
Have you had to cancel a gig? Nope
Where have you played live this year? Well, we’ve played at many different pubs and also at some open-air festivals.
Where do you plan to gig the comming year? We have the intention to start playing all over the country and if it’s possible abroad, maybe in North America, Europe and in Japan, as we’re gonna start recording a new album in the 2nd semester this year.
When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? We’ve start very long time ago and we’ve offered t-shirts, but now we have a plan to sell mugs, keyholders, picks, caps and t-shirts.
Where can people buy your merchandise? We intend to start selling online and at our concerts.
What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? I have 2 points of view: the physical album has its charm and I guess is something more “human”, “warmer”. On the other hand, downloading music from official sites for very low prices could be something people (maybe) would do, since they were offered some kinds of benefits (e.g. discount on tickets, special sessions with the band, etc).
How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? I guess record labels are forced to offer products for more reasonable prices and great quality if they intend to survive.
What do you think of my work? As I’ve just learned about you, I can’t say much, but I guess it’s pretty interesting and, who knows, helpful for the artists.
How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? If it’s published and well spread over, it may become a good tool for reaching more people than our usual ways.
Do you have any role models or idols? As a guitar player, I admire pretty much Brian May (Queen), Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Aerosmith, Eddie Van Halen & band among many, many others.
Why do you think that they exist? Well… maybe God wanted to share some of his gifts with some few lucky ones down here… kkk
Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? Honestly, I think older bands are more inspiring than new ones, but there are some new artists with really good ideas that can motivate new experiences.
What have been your biggest obstacles? Lack of money for investing seriously in the band and making some ideas become real; as we don’t make a living only with music, time is a problem as well; better support from radio stations; among others.
What advice would you give other bands or artists? Joining forces and efforts is always good, so contact other bands in your area and try to set nice gigs together; organize your material; don’t be afraid of playing everywhere and as much as possible; in the beginning be sure you’ll probably not make money, so be humble; be always nice, polite and respectful with your audience; don’t copy what we have all over the place ‘cause rarely a copy is better than the original; among other advices.
How do you get psyched for a gig? The band and I really enjoy playing live, so since early morning of the day of a concert we start doing some warm ups, check equipment, select outfits, make posts on the net and things like that. We also follow the stage set up and after the sound check we usually relax with friends and warm up.
Do you have any new material? We’re gonna prepare new stuff on the second semester this year.
What are your web sites? We’re rebuilding it right now.
How can people reach you? Via Facebook, YouTube, in person and also through phone.
What are your plans for the future? We intend to record our new album this year yet, prepare 2 video clips, book many concerts around the country and try something in North America, Europe and Asia.
Do you have something to add? We’d like to thank you for the opportunity and we hope it brings some good fortune for all of us!
