interview with Os13

Have any of you played in other bands? Yes. In fact, all of us played in other bands. Me (bassist) and the drummer played together in other 5 bands, including a Sepultura cover called Sepultribe. The others also played in many other bands from different music genres, like Rock, Pop, Reggae, Metal, etc.

How is it that you started playing music? I started at 15 when my oldest brother taught me my first chords on the acoustic guitar. A year later, I started listening to Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and I fell in love for the bass on time. All the members started between 10 and 15 years old.

What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you?

Andrey Milan, 32, Vocal

Pedro Piapa, 27, Bass and Backing Vocals

Rodrigo Ribas, 28, Guitar

Felipe Niz, 29, Guitar

Roni Gambale, 33, Drums

Have you had other previous members? Yes, the band had other formation in the first year and changed for this one we have right now. The previous members were Lipe (Drums), Parrudo (Guitar) and Shok (Bass) and they played at year 2015.

Did you make music even when you were young? We all make music since we were 15 (average). Each one has your own characteristics when composing, writing and playing. Andrey is a bit more acid, meanwhile Ribas is a bit more rhythmic, etc.

Where are you from? We are all from the North Zone of São Paulo, SP, Brazil.

What year did the band form? Andrey Milan (Vocals) formed the band at year 2.014. 8) What's your style of genre? Answer: We float into Rock, Rap and Pop. We try to mix all of our influences and put our aggressiveness and consciousness in our songs.

What inspires you? Each one has the own inspiration, of course, but I can say that we have one in common that is the desire to convey positive and critical ideas to the public in order to make them reflect on. 10) How often and where do you reherse? Answer: We rehearse at least twice a week. There is no other way to do high-level shows without rehearsing as much as possible. We just do not rehearse more because all of us have other occupations beside music so we don’t have more time during the week.

How have you developed since you started with the music? Each one has developed very much since we started with the music. Not only the ability to play your own musical instrument, but also the knowledge of the phonographic market and all its branches.

Do you have other interests of work outside the band? Yes, since we’re not capable to live only by making concerts, we all have a second occupation.

Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? Not yet. We are studying the best way to make it and with whom.

Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? We don’t look for a label. In fact, our most concern is to make what we really love. Of course always trying to do our best when it comes to musicality.

What made you decide to make this music? All of our songs are based on our experiences with all these years observing the musical market and the desire to convey our ideas about everyday life.

What are your songs about? Political criticism, friendship, good vibes, diverse stories, love, good values, etc.

Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? All lyrics are composed by Andrey (Vocals).

Do you start with the music or the lyrics? This varies according to the song. There are songs that we start with the lyrics, others with the melody, and others with everything at the same time.

Do you compose in a certain enviroment? No. Any place, any time.

Have you done any covers live? We do many covers live. All from Brazilian artists, like Charlie Brown Jr., Raimundos, O Rappa, Mamonas Assassinas, among many others.

What language do you sing in? We sign in Portuguese (Brazil).

What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? We’ve already played even for small audiences (10 people) or large audiences (such as 40,000 people).

What ages are most of your concert attendants? The majority of our concert attendants are between 20 and 30 average.

Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? We always try to vary our setlist in order not to annoy people with the same presentation.

Do you have a regular place you play live often? No. We vary very often.

What was your first gig like? Our first gig was in a stage in São Paulo East Zone called Cervejazul and it was wonderful. The concert was acoustic as we were getting ready for our first radio interview and it was just awesome! The public liked it and responded with great affection.

What was your latest gig? It was May 24th, in a stage in front of a traditional college called PUC in São Paulo West Zone. The emotion from the last gig is just like the first one. We love it.

Have you had to cancel a gig? Yes. Once we were participating in a festival at Peruíbe, a seaside town in São Paulo State. The wind was so strong that the stage was shaken and we have to cancel it doing to security.

Where have you played live this year? At least in 20 different places.

Where do you plan to gig the comming year? We plan to gig in Rock in Rio, but it’s very hard to get there!

When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? We started three years ago, selling T-Shirts with 3 differents logos. As the first EP was recorded, we started to sell it. We also sell stickers.

Where can people buy your merchandise? People can buy out merchandise in our page on Facebook.

What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records nowadays? It’s great. People who like records will keep buying them. I am an example. I still collect vinyl records and compact discs. I see that many people don’t buy it because like few songs from the artist. Beyond that, you may set up your own Playlist, while the physical you have an artistic work of a single artist.

How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? Recorders were hit hard by this, drastically lowering the number of artists hired. However, today it is much easier to become an independent artist.

What do you think of my work? Your work is awesome! We need more people like you to show new artists for everybody.

How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? Well, it’s our first interview for Sweden. I think people like to listen to music in other languages and get different influences. I love Argentine rock, for example. Our song “Bélico Descendente” plays along 13 countries around the world. The music business is hard, but who knows… suddenly we receive an invitation to play in Sweden.

Do you have any role models or idols? Many! Ayrton Senna, Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, Chorão (Charlie Brown Jr. Vocals), among many others.

Why do you think that they exist? They existed simply to be unique. They influenced generations, changed scenarios, were the best at what they did.

Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? Both of them. The ideal is to be able to add influences of yesterday and today. Beyond that, today's bands are influenced by those of the past.

What advice would you give other bands or artists? Make a song that satisfies you. Play from the heart. Practice your instrument as much as possible. Try to make a good videoclip, in high quality. Record your songs in a good studio. Remember that the song will remain forever, and nothing better than a high quality material.

How do you get psyched for a gig? The simple fact of being on stage doing what we love most is already exciting enough for us!

Do you have any new material? We have 4 songs in Spotify and 3 videoclips on YouTube. We have other songs that will be recorded still in 2018.
