interview with Jumpscare

What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you?
Before we start, I just wanna thank you for this interview, actualy this is our first interview in English  and we are very excited so apologize us if there are some mistakes!
-Jumpscare is composed by :
Lorenzo Gallo - voice , age 30
Vincenzo Mussolino - guitar , age 23
Andrea Di Martino - guitar , age 21
Salvatore Andrea Ciccarelli - bass , age 28
Last but not least me :
Graziano Ciccarelli - drums , age 21
Have you had other previous members? No,fortunately we never changed line up,we never replaced anyone in that sense. The only difference since the foundation of Jumpscare came with the addition of our other guitarist Andrea, who has been in the band since last May. Recruting him was the best thing we can do, we find a good friend, a great musician that helped us to evolve our sound and our songwriting in a different and better way, in my opinion. Yes,he has many defects, like all of the rest of it ( ahaha)but his personality and his ways of doing really match our attitude. Me, Salvatore, Vic and Lorenzo are  lifetime friends, and we could not imagine that in a short time we could find another person so determined and so similar to us, as if he were also a friend from the same time, we are very happy and everything is great!
Did you make music even when you were young?
Ehy! even now we're young, huh? ahahah
I'm joking. We are always into the music since childhood years,it's like breathing for us,we can not really live without it!
We always loved playing and making music for this reason we are here talking with you of our passion and our projects.
Where are you from? We are based in province of Napoli, South Of Italy.Lorenzo  and Vic are from Marigliano, me and my brother are from Mariglianella, while Andrea is from Gragnano, all of those little cities are very closer to each other.
What year did the band form? The band officially formed on the 1st of November 2015. I founded the band and then my brother Salvatore and my life-time friends Vic and Lorenzo joined in this projects. Last but not least,as I said before, in may 2017 we recruited our buddy Andrea that played his first show supporting DREAMSHADE.
What's your style of genre? Our style is a meltin pot of what we listened for years. We try to combine different genres and different experiences to create our unique sound,it's difficoult but we try to do our best in composition. We can say that we play an Alternative Metal because our style is a mix of Modern,Thrash Metal,Metalcore with a lot of influences from melodic death metal to nu-metal too. But labels aside, our music is a combination of melody and aggressivity, with an extremely large influences range from classics to modern rock/metal bands call it whatever you want, the most important for us is the message and the sensations that the music gives to the listener, for us it is not important to define our genre by names but the message that we want to reach  through our music and our lyrics.
What inspires you?
We have an infinite list of artists that we love and we admire for thier music, and thier attitude
The list goes from classics rock/metal bands of 70's to modern rock/metal bands.
As band we was influenced by :Alternative Metal,Melodic Death Metal,Metalcore,Nu Metal,Groove Metal,Melodic Metalcore,Thrash Metal,Hardcore,Post-Hardcore,Post-Metal,Crossover Hardcore/Thrash,Modern Metal and of course Rock/Metal classics bands from 70's to modern metal sound
Bands that influeced us (individually for each member,I try to name every artist we like, but It's difficoult because there are too many!): Linkin Park,Sepultura/Soulfly,Korn,Of Mice and Men,Disturbed,SOAD,Mudvayne,Pantera,Killswitch Engage,Bullet For My Valentine,36 CrazyFits,Trivium,Dreamshade,In Flames,Soilwork,Dark Tranquillity,Sonic Syndicate and of course the classic of metal as Black Sabbath,Motorhead,Iron Maiden,Metallica,Megadeth,Slayer etc...
A LOOOT OF STUFF as I said!
How often and where do you reherse?
We rehearse my practice room that we as joke called "MUSIC VAULT" (as the vaults of Fallout ,Bethesda game) about three times a week.
Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. Obviously the days can change, but we try to keep to rehearse minimum three times a week, we are lucky because we have our own practice room.
We try to dedicate as much time as possible to both the composition and the rehearsals of the song for live performances
At this time, however, we are focusing on the composition of what will be the first full length ... we are really working hard and I hope that all the effort are worth it. We strongly believe in us, so we try to do our best every time , in every song we play or create
Do you have other interests of work outside the band?
In addition to the band, we all have other tasks that keep us busy, we are all students and workers. I, for example, study civil and environmental engineering at the University of Naples, at the same univerisity Andrea does IT.
Vic studies music, my brother Salvatore will soon become a lawyer and Lorenzo instead studies Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technique
We are in a point where only the band's income is not enough to finance our activities and our, so we always have a plan B.Of course our dream one day is living only by our music business. It's Taugh but we will never give up!
Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that?
We always try to surround ourselves with people who primarily consider our music as valid and who are urged to promote us seriously and enthusiastically because they share our message and our vibe. We have various contacts with various Booking Agencies mainly in Est Europe and Italy, but we are always willing to expand our range of contacts, our dream is playing around the world.
Anyone who want to help us (whether it be label, agency or other) can contact us via mail: [email protected]
If you know some management, booking agencies, webzine, magaiznes or label and etc... please share with us your knowledge to be considered not only in our home country but also abroad.
We will be honored to be able to work with those who care about music, art and the message we want to transmit through our music.
I believe that an artist wants to reach as many people as possible and wants to be promoted as widely as possible, ergo I can only be pleased that there are so many realities willing to spread the music, provided they behave humanly and do not exploit the blood and the sweat of a band or a musician
But like in every other thing there are heroes and villains.
What are your songs about?
We do not place limits on the themes of our lyrics. Mostly they are social and anthropological themes told or through personal stories or metaphors
Sometimes we also like to spit in the face of the listener our strong message with a hardcore-oriented lyrics. We are very various on this too,we listened a lot and also we like a lot of different music,we have different inspirations.
The first EP, for example, was a concept on how dreams and nightmares influenced everyday life while second EP instead was more free and spontaneous as well as direct.
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? There is no one composer, every Jumpscare song is a team work of all of us, everyone is an active part of the band even during composition
Do you start with the music or the lyrics? We start first to compose instrumental music, then after we all discuss together on the changes to the arrangement and finished it we move on to the vocal part and finally to the lyrics
Have you done any covers live?
When we released our first demo THREE MARKS OF DREAMS, and we had only not so many original song,in our live shows(the first especially) we used to mix both covers and original songs. With our first EP SOWING STORMS came out, we focused on playing only our own songs but, however, we always leave room for a cover because we like to tribute our favorite artists and have fun on stage with people.
For example, we played Roots Bloody Roots of the Sepultura (even in acoustic LOL) and Bodies of the Drowning Pool several times. It was also nice to have guests on stage singing these songs with us.
We like to party as much as we can on stage, and we have a lot of fun playing just one cover in addiction to our own songs! Of course of "main quest" is promote and play our original material, but  we try to involve people as much as we can, and if you are an emerging artist, sometimes add a cover to our setlist is a good stategy to bring more people to party with you!
What language do you sing in?
Although we are from Italy and we listen to a lot of music even in our mother tongue, it was easier and more immediate to write in English for us.
We have been influenced by many bands that write lyrics and sing English, we want to reach a wider fan base than only Italy are the more easiest reasons, but the main factor is that we like to write in English more than in Italy,we find it more suitable and immediate for metal in our opinion. Although there are bands like Rhapsody, Lacuna Coil and Rosae Crucis that have made songs or entire discographies in Italian and they kicked a lot of asses too. It is a matter of taste and attitude.
What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs?
Our last gig in a new (but small) venue in Napoli went sold out! Crazy!
The most people attending our concert was circa 200 of them, it was our first gig in Halloween supporting a Marlyn Manson Tribute Band...that was crazy!
While the least people at our concert was circa 20 people.
200 or 20 of them we try to do our best anyway when we perform!
What ages are most of your concert attendants? It's various ages attending our concerts from teenagers to old man who loves metal too! It's crazy how metal music can connect different people ofi different age, culture, nationality with any restriction!
Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? We do various setlist, depends on the type of people who attend the gig, what we music we are promoting and the times that we have
Do you have a regular place you play live often?
In Napoli there were Hades Live Music Pub, but now is closed.
Another "fantastic" venue was Centro Sociale Spartaco in Santa Maria Capua Vetere,we supported Dreamshade there and we  played there several times, good place and good people!
Many thanks to Distrake Booking Agency!
What was your first gig like? As I said before, we played before a Marlyn Manson Tribute band. Audience was crazy , we had a great time! I will never forget that night.
What was your latest gig?
Our latest gig was in a Open Air Festival in Rome on the May Day called "Jobless Day".
22 bands, crazy audience and a lot of merch sold! What a great Day!
Have you had to cancel a gig?
Unfortunately yes, but only for serious reasons such as funerals, physical and health problems of one us
fortunately this has happened very few times
Where have you played live this year? This year we played across Campania (our region) and Italy
Where do you plan to gig the comming year?
We are planning big supporting acts, tour across Europe when our album is done. Stay tuned we can hit your city too!
When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale?
We start to sell merch since our release party, last june.
We started to sell our t-shirt,stickers (as gift) and also hard copies of our cd, for the next album  we are planning to produce beanies,hoodies,sweatshirt,t-shirt with different colors and graphic, pendants, custom drumsticks , custom strings and everything you can imagine!

jumpscareband.bigcartel.com
Of course you can always find a merch table during our live shows!
What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? I do not want to do too much controversy. I have nothing against the download, because I have used it myself for years (using legal methods). But I think especially for underground bands, if people buy more music and more merch would guarantee a higher rate of income for the band that could invest those money in the promotion to be known in many places in the world and have a better resonance for example in radios,in big supporting acts etc... Unfortunately, the reality is not as we wish, so although there is a small "hard core" (LOL) of people who actively support underground music bying records ands merch, we must be aware of the fact that now things have changed, so let's take advantage of music download and streaming portals to have mre resonance and get new fans around the world.
How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? the music business works like any other business and reasons by following the earnings and revenues that come from the music, so it is useless to complain if the concert tickets increase, if many more promoters use that aberrant thing called "pay to play" ... it would be very minimal if there was more active support from both the bands and the public. Support generates economic revenue, and it affects the majors and industries. The next vote that you decide not to support an underground event in your area think about the consequences on your projects and situations where as there are no big gains things will never evolve. The world is in our hands, if we want to change it is necessary to act, not to complain in front of the computer or writing useless posts on facebook.
What do you think of my work?
Surely I appreciate the work you do and the time that you invest to achieve and pursuit this "mission", I thank you for having given this space and for being interested in our project, so I definitely have a positive opinion of you and your work, you do a fantastic job! When we'll meet someday I'm honored to offer you a cold beer ! Skoll! ahah ;D
thanks again for this interview !
How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business?
Every interview, web articles, music reviews are good to give more resonance to this project. This our first interview in a non-italian webzine/music blog is an honor for us, maybe this interview can reach some fans and some new fans aborad Italy,Europe and beyond, this is very beautiful how internet can connect people in this massive way! I hope that someone who does not now who we are can appreciate our words and our music. IMHO this interview is very important for me and for the rest of the band.
Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? It's a taught question. As band we try to find inspiration both from the classic of a genre and from new bands, it's a matter of taste and attitude of course. Maybe If I have to choose , I will say that is easier to find inspiration from bands active today, because our project tries  to have a modern attitude and sound.
What advice would you give other bands or artists?
I write just few things because I have gone too far in the previous questions
Simply work hard, support your own underground scene in your area, help each other, engage relationship and friendship with other bands supporting each other, have the right mentality to seriously carry on the music despite the thousand adversities and have fun because music is life!
Do you have any new material?
Now no... we are still composing our first full lenght! Stay tuned on our official social media pages for further information and release date.
