interview med Dawn of Oblivion

What is the name of your band? Dawn of Oblivion

What is alloy name "Dawn of Oblivion" For? We took the name from a chinese proverb that ”you can always forgive, but you can never forget”. For us it kind of means to begin something new and leave the past behind you.

What made you to be baptized to just "Dawn of Oblivion"? I like the words Dawn and Oblivion and it’s a name where everybody can find their own meaning and adapt it on their own experiences. When me and Per Broberg left The Legacy and formed Dawn of Oblivion we thought carefully what our new band should be called. The words Dawn of Oblivion was already in the lyrics in one of the songs.

What made you start playing music? I’ve always been interested in music and sang a lot with my family. When I was a kid I watched the pictures in my elder brother’s magazines. I saw Gene Simmons and Ace Frehley of Kiss and I wanted to do the same thing.

What made you start a band? I was a guitarist and a bass player in a lot of local Heavy Metal, Sleaze or Punk-bands and my singing contribution was most of the time only for backup singing because none of the bands that me and my friends listened to had my barytone voice. One day I heard The Sisters of Mercy with their barytone singer and a whole new world opened up for me as I discovered I could actually use my voice and singing abilities in gothic music.

What was the plan when you started the band? To create musical landscapes that I myself wants to listen to. When I listen to music I always picture landscapes in my mind and I get inspired by a lot of different genres. If you listen carefully to Dawn of Oblivion you will find everything from Burzum to Madonna.

When did you start off band? Dawn of Oblivion was formed in 1991 when me and Per Broberg left The Legacy. We had some different bandmembers until our first classic lineup with me, Per, Jesper Rydberg and Andreas Båge was set in 1993.

Where have you played from 1991 to 2013? I’ve spent my time with Dawn of Oblivion of course, but in the beginning of the 2000’s I sang with Malmö-based Tenebre and I have also been part of a Vampire cover band called After Midnight. Lately I have also contributed with vocals on Simon Manning’s (Children on Stun, Grooving in Green, Spares) project Hollow Eve.

Each was led first gig? My first gig with Dawn of Oblivion was in Höganäs in front of probably not more than 50 persons.

Where were off last gig? The latest gig was at the Deep Club in Malmö on a gothic festival with Fields of the Nephilim, Dark Side Cowboys and Dr Arthur Krause.

Each was led most promising gig? All our gigs are promising. We love spreading the word and music of Dawn of Oblivion no matter how many that shows up. Sometimes it’s a festival in front of thousands of people and sometimes it’s a smaller club.

How many people usually come to your gig? At clubs there are normally 200-300 people watching depending on the size of the club. At festivals it’s harder to guess.

Where do you plan to play the rest of the year? We plan to play Germany, England and Greece. We have a large fanbase in Greece as the matter of fact.

What you drive for music style? I am a large consumer of music and I find interesting stuff in many different genres. I look for intriguing melodies and harmonies that I can later use composing for Dawn of Oblivion. I like to be taken on a musical journey when I listen to music.

What made you start with just "Gothic Metal”? My roots are in metal and it’s the kind of music where I feel my expressions become most true to my inner self. I have a natural barytone voice that can be kind of dramatic sometimes, so gothic metal is almost stamped on the back of my head ;)

What are your songs about? My songs are a reflection of what I see, hear or feel. I have a strong sense of right and wrong and can be very upset if I read or see some injustice. You can almost call it therapy in writing music because it’s sometimes very relieveing putting it on paper and out of your head. Dawn of Oblivion is of course very critical to religion and mass hysteria. This is reflected in many of our songs. In the other hand we are not misanthropic as we believe in equality and the abilities and power of every human being.

Do you own songs or covers? We only do covers on our live sets. All music on our CD’s are written by ourselves.

Who writes the songs? / Who does the music? I write all the lyrics and the music is mostly written by Stefan Rosqvist (guitars), Jonas Nilsson (bass) and myself.

Who has the best humor? I must say Jonas. He’s the joker in the band and always manages to deliver the sickest jokes.

Good and bad sides of the band? Being in a band with 4 other guys is like a family sometimes. We respect each other and it’s a great lineup we have right now. The bad sides of the band are the previous lineup changes that always are a tough period to go through.

What are your web pages? We have an official webpage at http://www.dawnofoblivion.net that is run by our management. We also have a facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/dawnofoblivion and on reverbnation http://www.reverbnation.com/dawnofoblivion
