interview with Miasmic Theory

What is the name of your band? MT: Miasmic Theory.

What does the name "Miasmic Theory" stand for?  MT:Since the 1800s rejected the theory that diseases resulting from poor air.

What made you call the band "Miasmic Theory"? MT: We discussed about something called miasma and looked up what it meant, and our drummer suggested miasmic theory.

How was the band formed? MT: Valter and Thomas wanted to start a band and began searching members. We asked Thomas old drummer Markus if he wanted to play and luckily he wanted it. Thomas wanted to have someone to share the song with and found Lisa and who in turn found the bass player Oskar.

What made you form the band? MT: Both valter and Thomas had quit in their bands and wanted to start a new band. Valter had a bunch of new songs and Thomas knew people who knew how to play and thats how the band was formed.

Can you briefly introduce your band and who you are? MT: Hard hitting metalband from Gothenburg Sweden,5 members, everybody with experience from previous bands with different styles. A band with many influences and likes to write music without predefined styles or frames. The only requirement is that it sounds heavy and distorted haha.

Where are all bandmembers from?/Who does what in the band? MT: Almost all born and raised in Gothenburg except Valter, he is from Haparanda. Lisa Hultgren and Thomas Persson song,Markus Lihnell drums,Oskar Franzen bass and Valter Koivunen guitar.

What was the ambitions of the band when you started? MT: The ambition was to play simpel, fast modern two-stroke deathmetal something like Dimension Zero and so on,drink beer and have a lot of fun.

Could you explain your music to someone that haven't heard you? MT: It's always hard to describe your own music. Modern death / trash metal with elements of all the band members' influences.

Where was your first gig? MT: I think it was at a venue called Sticky Fingers in Gothenburg Sweden.

Where was the latest gig? MT: A venue called Belsepub in Gothenburg Sweden.

Who writes your songs?/ who writes the music who writes lyrics? MT: The singers writes the lyrics. Valter writes the music and puts all the songs together with the whole band. Everybody is involved.

Who has the best since of humor in the band?MT: Impossible to say, have to say it is a draw haha. Gothenburg Humor mixed with norrland humor. It's pretty immature jargon in our band, i think.

What genre do you feel you are? MT: Modern death/trash metal.

Why did you pick that particular style?/What are your songs about? MT:We all wanted to play some kind of death / trash and since there are five members with different influences,we met in the middle and this is what comes out. The songs are mostly about anxiety and all kinds of fears.

Do you write your own material or mainly covers? MT : Own material only.

Have you made any albums?/If yes what are they? MT: We have released one album,Sound of desperation.

Do you have any clips on YouTube? MT: Yes we do. Some studioclips, liveclips and a video we made to the song called Failure. Write Miasmic Theory on youtube and most of it will come up.

How old are you?/What got you started in music? MT:27-34 year. Everybody started very young with music so what we all have in common is that there is certainly some cool bands behind that inspired to start playing.

What year was the band started? MT: In early spring 2008

What places will you be playing in in the imidate future? MT: Nothing booked for now. We are going to record our new album in december so we are pretty busy with that right now.

What songs are in your live set's? MT: Some good old songs from our early demos mixed with songs from our album Sound of desperation.

Is it always the same set's live? No not really. It depends what we are into in the rehearselroom for the moment and what feels fresh and fun for the moment.

What has been the best/most promising gig so far? House of metal in Umeå. Great gig and the best indoorfestival in Sweden!

Have you had any bigger tours from start till now? MT:We have not toured yet with this band but it is in the planning so in the future we will go on tour.

How big crowds do you usually play for? MT: It depends how big venue, from 100-500 people.

What are the plans for the rest of the year? MT: Recording our new album and do some gigs.

Where do you usually play? MT: Different venues in Gothenburg and around Sweden.

How do you get psyched up for a gig? MT: Chilling with a beer or two(not too many)playing pool or darts or whatever and just hanging with the band and our dear friends.

What are your goals with your music? To write great songs, record albums and having a great time while doing it.

When did you decide to go all in for the music? MT: from the very beginning when we started listening and play music.

Is it easier to get your inspiration from older bands or from bands more modern? MT:It depends. A lot comes from older bands that has been around awhile but there are some really sick “new” bands out there that are awesome and very inspiring.

What are your sources of inspiration? MT: Mainly our personal favorite bands and musicians that gives inspiration. Or just the music you listen to at the time or whatever. Sometimes you get inspiration from totally unexpected sources.

What's the first step when making a new song? MT: Valter comes up with some riffs and ideas and then we let it go with the flow and hopes that it works out to be a great song.

How do you feel about the downloading of music instead of buying albums? MT: Downloading is a great way to reach out with your music but at the same time you loose a whole lot of money, specially if you are a not so famous band with very small income.

What would be your dreams for the band? MT: To be big enough so we can quit our day jobs and go in it 100% for the band.

Besides your own music, what genres and bands do you listen to? MT: A lot of death, black and trash metal. Bands like The Crown,Pantera,Darkane,The Haunted,Misery Index, Skitsystem,Nasum,Gojira and so on..But there is room for other genres too that is not as much metal. We listen to all kind of music.

What do you hold most dear? MT: Our instruments, friends and families and our health haha.

What would be your greatest fears for the future? MT:Well we are almost there already. That record labels don´t give a shit about great bands anymore. All that matters is to make as much money as possible. Its almost impossible to get any response or signings from labels these days if you don´t sell hundreds of thousands of records or tour you self to death. Thanks to people who don´t pay for music anymore. Great musicians quit their bands because they can not afford to play anymore. Thats pretty scary to me.

When you are on stage, what do you fear most then? MT: That something goes so wrong that we have to cancel.

Have you been in any other bands? MT: Thomas and Markus played in a band called Closed,Lisa came from a band called Orion,Oskar played in a band called As I burn and Valter was a drummer in a band called Spinning Black Circle.

What do you work with outside of the band and the music? MT:Different boring day jobs like, welder, truck driver and so on..

What would you do if there was no music? MT: We would probably go and rot away and die haha. We'd probably be so bored that we would invent music.

How important are your fans? MT: Without the fans we would play for barstaff and security guards at gigs so the fans are really important to us. And flattering that someone wants to listen to us.

What's the funniest/most memorable thing a fan has done for you? MT: It's always flattering when people want autographs or want us to send lyrics to them.

How often do you rehearse? MT: About a few times a week maybe, depending on what's going on.

Where do you rehearse? MT: Lindholmen Gothenburg.

Name 2 of your own songs you like at the moment? MT: There is some really great new songs we are going to record soon so its hard to pick out just 2.

What do you feel is the best liveband you've seen? MT: Gojira,Nasum,KISS,The Crown,Baroness,TOOL,DOWN,Slipknot and lot of another great bands.

What drives a band that isn't all that famous and renowned to try to make a living on their music and to keep playing? MT: In our case it is the music itself and the friendships within the band that is the reason why we can keep this up and get making records and gigs. We know we will never get rich on our music and that's not the reason either why we play. We're a bunch of close friends who love to play metal and if it would lead somewhere, it's just a bonus.

Do you have any webpages? MT: Yes. Facebook and www.miasmictheory.com

Any pearls of wisdom for all other bands out there? MT: Get ready to do all the work yourself if you want to get anywhere. And be prepared to sacrifice a lot of time and money if you are not lucky enough to get a record deal.

Describe your show, visually and musically MT: Energetic, fast and hard, loud and sweaty haha.

What advice would you like to give other bands? MT: Best songs are born when writing music for yourself and the music you are proud of and can stand for.

What is best/worst with playing the clubs? MT: The best thing about a club gig is that it is intimately close to the audience and great party feeling. The only bad thing may be that it can get a little crowded on the stage.

Tell us about upcomming gigs and why we should be at them? MT: Just like we said we are going to record new album and the next gig will be brand new songs and it will be really awesome. full speed from the start, and of course we throw in some old songs in the set as well. No one has heard the new songs live yet so it will be something really special.

How would you describe your sound in one sentence MT: Modern death/trash metal.

Whats your Pre-show ritual? MT: We are probably not so much for rituals. Maybe make sure to go to the bathroom, tune the instruments, take a sip of beer, turn the volume to max and then just enjoy the show haha.

What do you feel a band/muscian should spend their money on? MT: Whatever they need to spend money on to keep the band moving forward. It´s up to the band. Boring answer, sorry :)
