interview with The Morphean

Who started the band? Tell us a brief introduction of who you are? Hey, my name is Burns and I am the singer/shouter in the band. In the end of 2014 we will have our 10th anniversary. Since our foundation in 2004 we played several gigs in our home country and produced two demos and a video. In 2008 our first successful output hit the music business. Our EP “Divine”. Because of so many positive reactions we decided to enter the studio in 2010 to produce our first full-length record “Enter The Illusion” which was released via “Refused Records”. After some line-up changes and cool live shows with Soilwork, Hatesphere, Born From Pain and so on we hired Uli Meisinger as our new drummer and produced a single called “Crossroad”. This was the first step into a new era. So we hit the studio again in 2013 (Studio Suiseidl, Germany) to record our second album called “Mechanical” which will be released via Noisehead Records this year.

What made you call the band "The Morphean"? Oh, that is not easy to explain. In our early history we had to change our name and it took us a long time to find the right one. We spoke about our lyrics and what we want to express with them. So it is a synonym for the fact that every person has its good but also bad sides. And when the bad ones (which can slumber deep inside) awake our emotions can overwhelm us.

Where are you from? We are from Austria.

What is your name?/Who plays what?/How old are you?

Our current line up:

Burns Biermayr – Vocals

Markus Großwindhager – Guitars

Christoph Giera – Guitars

Georg Karl – Bass

Uli Meisinger – Drums

We are between 28 and 29 years old.

Explain to those who have not heard you, how does your music? Basically we try to mix up as much sounds as we can to create our own style. I think we did this well on our new album “Mechanical”. So, I would say it's modern deathmetal, oldschool parts with modern elements.

What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs? What are your songs about? Basically all lyrics deals about humans and their emotions (hate, anger, fear, love, …). I see our music and the lyrics I write as a balance to my/our normal life. I want to write lyrics which hit the people at their hearts. We hate to write violent lyrics, so we didn't.

What do you do besides the band and the music? We all have normal jobs like software engineers, teacher, social worker and so on.

What is your goal with your music? It is important for us that we make music in a professional way and produce good songs and albums. Our goal is to play as many good shows as possible and impress the people who visit our shows.

Besides your music style you play what do you like the music still enjoy listening to? I think we all love metal and rock and this are the genres we are into it at most. But some of us are also interested in electronic music.

What is the biggest fear when you go onstage? For me, that I can't remember a word of the lyrics.

Do you always play the same songs live or vary it? We have a pool of songs and we change the live set some times. Currently we're playing songs of our old record “Enter The Illusion” and mix this up with newer ones.

Best/worst performed gig? I think the worst gig was our first one. No one of us knew what he had to do. It was awful, but we learned very much. There were so many great gigs at great venues with an awesome crowd. So, I can't choose one.

Where do you plan to play the rest of the year? We confirmed some gigs at this time and there will follow some more to promote our upcoming record “Mechanical”. Visit us on facebook or at our homepage www.themorphean.com and you will be up to date.

What is the first step to a new song? Our guitarist or our bass player come up with a new riff or some ideas and write them down. Then we enter our home studio and begin with the songwriting process. Sometimes a song is written in hours, sometimes it took us month to finish the whole thing.
