interview with Festung Nebelburg

What´s the name of your band? Festung Nebelburg

What made you call the band "Festung Nebelburg"? I was looking for a name for the project. Some days after I was watching the castle ruin Burg Weissenstein near my home on a foggy autumn day.  That's how the name was born. Primitively translated you could say it's "Fortress Fogcastle".

How was the band formed? I had a one man project before called "Nordfrost". After a while I got tired of the name. Additionally, the music that I made before didn't quite match the newer style which I planned to play with Festung Nebelburg. I remember that I gave the project the new name in the beginning of 2006. Still, I would say it remained the same project but with a new style and new major lyrical topics.

Can you tell about your band? As I said before, Festung Nebelburg is a one man project. With the 2007 debut album "Gabreta Hyle" I concentrated on playing some sort of  Black or Pagan Metal mixed with regional sagas and legends from the Bavarian Forest (the area where I am from; it is located in East Bavaria/Germany). The newer stuff I produce is probably a bit more Punkrock or Rock-influenced. The new songs put a focus on the "Rauhnächte", the twelve nights around christmas and new year's eve which had and hopefully still have a cultural and spiritual meaning for people in parts of Bavaria and Austria. A lot of strange things can occur in the days between the years.I love to write and play this kind of music but as you can see Festung Nebelburg is also some kind of preservation of regional culture which is very important to me as a person.

Where are all band members from?/Who does what in the band? As I said, FN is a one man project. This means I am responsible for each tone and each of your aching ears after you gave a listen to Festung Nebelburg.

What was the ambitions of the band when you started? Back when I was running Nordfrost I just wanted to write some metal/punk songs and lyrics about Odin, Thor and all the other things that 10000 bands already sang about.  Since Festung Nebelburg replaced Nordfrost I have been trying to emphasize my origins and their myths and customs. This is also the reason why I hardly write songs in other languages than German. The spirit of the topic gets lost otherwise.

Could you explain your music to someone that haven't heard you? This question has always been a problem. I am not sure how I could answer it properly as I think you can find many styles such as Black Metal and Punkrock in my music. I suggest you create a classification for yourself after having listened to Festung Nebelburg.

Do you plan live gigs? I was thinking about the possibility to find some live band members but I have to admit that I cannot imagine how to set up a live version of FN due to time problems.

Why did you pick that particular style? When I read about legends or customs from my home region I get a particular mood in my stomache. This mood creates the riffs and melodies of Festung Nebelburg

Have you made any albums?/If yes what are they?Yes, but it's only the debut album "Gabreta Hyle" (2007) so far.  Of course, a second LP is planned. Still, I won't give statements about possible release dates.

Do you have any clips on YouTube? There are a couple of videos on YouTube but it was fans that put them on the platform.

How old are you?/What got you started in music? I'm still 26, but will turn 27 in not even a month (unfortunately!).

At what age did you start playing? I bought my first guitar at the age of 15. So I guess, that was in 2002.

What year was the band started? Nordfrost in late 2004, Festung Nebelburg roughly in early 2006.

What are your goals with your music? To stay independent and to ignore trends in music. I guess, that's for the best of the project, to keep it unique.

What are your sources of inspiration?BOOKS! I believe that there wouldn't be many Festung Nebelburg songs if I hadn't have read the books about customs and legends. They more or less act like an initiator for my songs to be in the necessary mood for writing music.

How do you feel about the downloading of music instead of buying albums? Hmmm. Good question. I don't want to say that downloads generally suck but an album or EP with a nice booklet and which you can touch is always more interesting than an mp3. Still, everyone has to decide for her-/himself which medium is the preferred one.

Besides your own music, what genres and bands do you listen to? To many different bands, artists and styles. But Black Metal, Punk and Folk are probably my favourites.

Have you been part of any other projects/bands?I played in several bands but nobody really heard about them. Well,  I indeed played bass in Wolfchant but I quit already in 2008 because it consumed too much of my time unfortunately.

What would you do if there was no music? Dying while driving (thanks to boredom).

Name 2 of your own songs you like at the moment? I pretty much like Drudendrücken, Vorboten and Die Thomasnacht at the moment. Oh, sorry, that was 3.

Do you have any webpages? Oh yeah. I have a non-up to date website. I will of course work on the page once the release date gets closer. Additionally, you can find and like Festung Nebelburg on Facebook if you are interested in news about the project.

How do you view the music industry of today? As you say, it's an industry. Many people complain about the fact that they work profit-oriented. Well, why don't they complain about BMW or Microsoft? Still, I am glad to be in a position that allows me not to give about the evil music industry because I don't depend on it.

How would you describe your sound in one sentence Quite cold and raw. Just perfect for a cold Rauhnacht.

Do you have anything to add? Thank you very much for the interview and the interest in the project. I would appreciate to see some of you guys liking the Festung Nebelburg page on Facebook or adding me there. You can also find music there and on YouTube. Have a nice one and cheers!
