interview with Ultra Pulverize

What´s the name of your band? Ultra Pulverize
What made you call the band "ULTRA PULVERIZE"? It was the coolest name we could think of.
How was the band formed? Our involvement in the band was pre-determined by birth.
Can you tell about your band? We are an electronic synth-punk rap three-piece from the near future.
Where are all band members from?/Who does what in the band? Ultra is in charge of vocals and human energy. Tony Robot plays the beat machine and sampler by hand. Korgenbütz plays synthesizers and theremin.
What was the ambitions of the band when you started? The band first started as a video concept. The decision to turn it into a live act was a social experiment at first, but we had so much fun doing it and there was such a great response from the crowd that we continued to play and record.
Could you explain your music to someone that haven't heard you? It has been called by some "a mean version of Devo".
Where was your first gig? Our first gig was outside of a university medical school on testing day.
Where was the latest gig? Latest gig was at Zanzabar in Louisville, Kentucky.
Who writes your songs?/Who writes the music who writes lyrics? Ultra writes the lyrics, Tony Robot and Korgenbütz are in charge of the instrumentation.
What's good/bad with the band?/What genre do you feel you are? It's all good with the band. We are in the electronic genre of music.
Do you write your own material or mainly covers? All of our material is original.
Have you made any albums?/If yes what are they?
Gorillas in the Fist (2004, full-length)
Unoriginals Get the Dose (2007, full-lenth)
Toxic Vacation (2013, EP)
Do you have any clips on YouTube?
Yes, we have a few clips and a music video on our youtube page
http://www.youtube.com/user/ultrapulverize?feature=watch
How old are you?/What got you started in music? We are all young in terms of space and time. Music was a reason for Ultra to yell at people in a socially acceptable manner.
What year was the band started? The band was formed as a video concept in 2004.
Best/worst gig you've played? Worst gig was when we had our car (with instruments) towed away moments before a show because we parked in a no parking zone in the parking lot of a closed business. Best gig has been any gig after that.
What places will you be playing in in the imidate future? Our next live show is the Louisville Arcade Expo on March 7, 2014.
Is it always the same songs live? Some golden oldies are always a must, but we try to keep it fresh with new stuff as often as possible.
Have you had any bigger tours from start to now? We toured Europe in 2011 and had a great time!
How big crowds do you usually play for? 300-500
What are the plans for the rest of the year? Our plans for the rest of the year include our full-length Robocop (1987) re-score performed to the movie LIVE.
How do you get psyched up for a gig? They way Ultra gets psyhced up for a gig is to hold in every bit of his true feelings, anger, etc. for as long as possible leading up to the show. Then once you get him in front of a crowd, the angry auto-pilot rapper takes control.
What are your goals with your music? Our goals with our music include making a million dollars so we can buy our mothers each a house on the hill.
Is it easier to get your inspiration from older bands or from bands more modern? Our inspiration comes mostly from both bands older than us, and from bands that don't exist yet.
What's the first step when making a new song? Songs come to life in different ways for each song. Sometimes it's the beat that's there first, sometimes it's a line of lyrics, sometimes it's just a song title that gets us started.
How do you feel about the downloading of music instead of buying albums? It's a great thing, and as long as people are listening to your music, that's good. But at the same time it makes it even more difficult for artists to make a living at doing what they love and what they are good at.
What do you hold most dear? We hold most dear to us the invention of electricity, for without it we would not exist.
When you are on stage, what do you fear most then? When on stage, we fear most of all the idea of flying off the handle.
What do you work with outside of the band and the music? Videos, hearts, and lungs.
What would you do if there was no music? Without music, we would just kick asses for a living.
How important are your fans? Our fans are the best! They are with us through thick and thin, lining up outside our headquarters everyday for us to sign their bodies and bless their babies.
What's the funniest/most memorable thing a fan has done for you? A beloved fan of ours made a glow-in-the-dark screenprinted poster of our faces, which was pretty awesome.
Name 2 of your own songs you like at the moment? Any two from our newest release, an EP called "Toxic Vacation"
What drives a band that isn't all that famous and renowned to try to make a living on their music and to keep playing? I wouldn't know, but I'm assuming it would have to be having a fun time!
Do you have any webpages? www.ultrapulverize.com
Any pearls of wisdom for all other bands out there? Suck it with your two-hour long soundchecks.
Describe your show, visually and musically If you don't listen quick enough, you will miss every bit of what Ultra has to say. It's intensely fun.
What are the biggest obstacles for a band? I think ego is the biggest obstacles for a band.
What is best/worst with playing the clubs? Every club is different. The best thing is the free booze. The worst thing is the free booze.
Tell us about upcoming gigs and why we should be at them? Any of our upcoming Robocop (1987) shows are must-see events because we're not going to be releasing this original re-score we came up with. If you don't see it live, you'll never see it. Here is a sample: https://vimeo.com/79252608#at=0
What is your favorite crappy instrument? I think it's a tie between the jaw harp and the electronic saxophone.
