interview with AXXION

What made you call the band "AXXION"?  Alison: well back when it was just DD and I and the old guitar player jamming, we were sitting on the couch trying to think of a wicked name and that one just popped into DD’s head!

How was the band formed? CR: DD and Alison started jamming together first writing some songs with the old guitarist Inti. DD sort of knew me from around in the scene and he ask if I would be interested in coming out to jam. After that things weren't really working out with Inti and Alison had known Shred from the Skull Fist days so the rest as they say is history.

Where are all band members from?/Who does what in the band? Alison: We’re all from Canada, all from the same city actually. Toronto. DD’s on vocals, Shred shreds, Chris is currently hiding from his sasquatch colony by disguising himself as our bass player, and I’m the chick drummer.

Could you explain your music to someone that haven't heard you? CR: Beer, Sweat, Leather, Babes, Motorcycles.

Where was the latest gig? Alison: Last gig we did was in Europe. We went over for the Headbanger’s festival in Germany and then a couple other shows. It was an amazing time, and the festival couldn’t have been more amazing; the people were wicked, the bands were wicked, we couldn’t have had a better time.

Who writes your songs?/ who writes the music who writes lyrics? Shred: Everyone writes stuff. Most of the time one of us has the shell of the song and we all just kind of fill in the pieces. Lyrics too we get them done.

Who has the best since of humor in the band? Alison: None of us are humorous, we’re all really serious and we take ourselves really seriously and any wisecracking is met with a swift smack across the head.

What's good/bad with the band? CR: The best thing about the band is that we all get along and don't take ourselves too seriously. The worst thing about the band is our singer's haircut.

Why did you pick that particular style?/What are your songs about? Shred: Our style is just what comes out so there’s no picking what we’re gonna be. I really don’t know how to play other styles of music so I guess I’m stuck. Most of our songs are about bikes, racing, chicks with big boobs, chicks with medium size boobs, and there’s one about chicks with small boobs!

Have you made any albums?/If yes what are they? Shred: We released a 5 song self-titled EP in 2012 and a full length Wild Racer in 2013.

Do you have any clips on YouTube? Shred: Ya we have a music video for the song Tonight off our last record so watch it cause it cost us a bunch of money!!!

How old are you?/What got you started in music? DD: We're all different ages, Im 21, Shreds gotta be at least 25, alison won't tell us how old she is but we think she's in her 30s somewhere. And Chris, he's in his early 50s. or maybe he was born in the early 50s… Either way chris has a fu manchu.

At what age did you start playing? CR: Bass wasn't my first instrument but I've been playing music pretty much my entire life. It's been a big part of me since I was little even though I didn't start playing the bass until I was a teenager. We were all in our teens playing in our first metal bands.

What year was the band started? DD: We were never a solid lineup until summer of 2012… Our first release was on halloween 2012 so i guess since then!

Best/worst gig you've played? DD: Best gig we've played... well I would say Headbangers but I was sick as a dog. So the best gig for me would be our tour launch show in Toronto.  But headbangers was definitely the most incredible.

What places will you be playing in in the imidate future? CR: We're playing real soon on our home turf (We haven't played here since July!) and then heading out for some Canadian gigs. When spring roles around we'll be heading out to the states and back to Europe again!

Witch band is the best you´ve seen? Alison: Best band I’ve ever seen live has got to be Saxon, they are exactly as you imagine them on record. Raw, powerful, LOUD I love it they are awesome live. Though followed closely by Iron Maiden who have also blown my mind!

How big crowds do you usually play for? CR: Headbangers was definitly the biggest crowd we've played for yet but we usually get a pretty good turnout for most shows. Just like with any band though, sometimes it's amazing and sometimes not so much.

How do you get psyched up for a gig?  Alison: Getting psyched for a gig isn’t hard at all. The fact that you have somebody who came out to listen to you play is more than enough. But you also gotta just love playing your instrument.

What are your goals with your music? Shred: I would want to live off it but in the last 10 years or so I’ve figured out that it’s not gonna work out like that, so now it’s one goal at a time. Next goal I have is to make a really good record!

Is it easier to get your inspiration from older bands or from bands more modern? Alison: To me it’s all about the feeling behind the music. Of course most of the stuff that influences us is the old stuff but that doesn’t mean I don’t fall in love with new bands, and the old guys are still making music too right so new is still old…haha right? Anyways yea to me if it sounds good I want it, don’t care if its new or old, good is good.

What are your sources of inspiration? Shred: Working my shitty job and thinking all day about how the next thing that we do is gonna be cooler than the last.

What's the first step when making a new song? Shred: I don’t think there’s really any steps they just kind of happen. If it doesn’t just happen then I usually stop and figure out what I’m workin on sucks. Then it’s on to the next idea.

When you are on stage, what do you fear most then? Alison: I’ve actually never had the ‘fear’ moments on stage, though I do get really pissed when stuff breaks, or falls on stage. Like one time we were playing a really small stage and DD kepts stepping back and kicking my cymbal stands accidentally and it was knocking it out of reach and he didn’t realize that he was doing it and the only time I could fix it was between songs but then it would happen all over again haha anyways.

What do you work with outside of the band and the music? CR: Alison is a crazy cat lady who collects stray cats, Shred eats poop (and sometimes fills in for Ron Jeremy's stunt cock), DD's always coming up with get rich quick scams and I teach people guitar and how to save lives.

How important are your fans? Alison: Fans are THE single most important factor for a band. Not a record deal, not a million dollar studio, the fans. A band is nothing without its fans and anyone who forgets that is a turd. We have the most amazing fans; they send us to coolest e-mails and photos and stuff it’s so great, and we love just going around shooting the shit with everyone at shows and whatnot. I don’t get bands that don’t want to meet their fans, they’re the people who get you too where you are!

What's the funniest/most memorable thing a fan has done for you?  Alison: This guy Simon from Germany made this awesome Canadian flag and put “Wild Racing over Europe” on it. It’s hanging in the record room as we speak.

How often do you rehearse? CR: As often as we need to... We're not very good, so it's often.

Any pearls of wisdom for all other bands out there? Alison: Uhhh I don’t think any of us are all that wise, but DON’T give up. That’s it, that’s all I can say. Just go and go and go, you’re gonna hit bumps, HUGE bumps, shit’s not gonna work out, people are gonna be jerks but you gotta keep going and it’ll happen in the end. But if you give up and say tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow, nothing happens and then you’re just like everyone else.

What advice would you like to give other bands? CR: As DD mentioned I'm like 50-something so I've been around and in many bands. The most important thing for a band is to make sure you like the people you're playing with because you're going to be spending a lot of time with their sense of humor, ideals, interests, smells and their stupid haircuts.

Whats your Pre-show ritual? Shred: Before every show I always enjoy a bottle of jack and a few whacking sessions to get warmed up and the blood flowing.
