interview with Impaled Martyr

What´s the name of your band? Desecrator: Hails, we are Impaled Martyr

How was the band formed? Desecrator: The band was formed as a solo project of mine, due to the  lack of black metal bands in my area. I have played in a few bands  previously, but it wasn't enough... During many nocturnal hours of  isolation, it was clear... I had to do this, even if it meant doing  everything on my own, at least in the beginning...

Can you tell about your band? Desecrator:This is our warfare against anything that  stands in our way. This band  wasn't started as an attempt to cling on to any passing trends, but as  something I felt was necessary. It never was and never will be about  trying to impress people. If one enjoys what we have to offer, it is  much appreciated, if one does not, it does not matter to me

Where are all band members from?/Who does what in the band? Desecrator: We are based in Hollister, California. I am the vocalist and play all instruments.

Lupus: I play guitar.

What was the ambitions of the band when you started? Desecrator: When I made the decision to start the band, there was no turning back... I   knew what I wanted and did what I needed to do to start making things  happen.

Lupus: Everyone needs a way to express anger, rage, and aggression. This is  mine. I saw what Desecrator was doing and I wanted to be a part of it.

Could you explain your music to someone that haven't heard you? Desecrator: A blend of first and second wave black metal. People often  say it sounds like old school black metal from the early 90s

Lupus: I would say, pure, fucking hatred!

Where was your first gig? Desecrator: Back yard barbeque, exclusively for close friends and family

Where was the latest gig? Desecrator: San Jose, California

Who writes your songs?/Who writes the music who writes lyrics? Desecrator: I wrote all the music for the first demo and a few others which were  previously unreleased, as well as lyrics. As of Lupus' joining of the  lineup as a full-time member, I still write the lyrics, and we both  write the music

Who has the best since of humor in the band?

Desecrator: Probably Lupus. I do have a sense of humor, but I tend to take things seriously as far as the music goes.

Lupus: Desecrator has a good sense of humor. I think he just forgets how to laugh sometimes.

What's good/bad with the band?/What genre do you feel you are?

Desecrator: Good: There are no problems in the current lineup, we mostly agree on  things regarding the band. Bad: Cannot find a reliable drummer, so we  currently play to pre-recorded drum tracks during gigs. Must keep moving forward. I feel we are genuinely black metal.

Lupus: Yeah, drummers are a pain in the ass... It's hard to find a good one. That being said, we are looking for one!

Why did you pick that particular style?/What are your songs about?

Desecrator: I was naturally drawn to "black metal." It isn't so much about trying  to stick to a particular genre, but about doing what feels natural. It  is my own realm, away from this world we live in. The songs are about  many things such as anti-religion, hatred/disgust, war, chaos,  life/death...

Lupus: Metal is limitless and the style of "black metal" just flows naturally from  us.  It isn't some calculated ploy. We play what inspires us, and if  someone likes it and connects to it, fine. But if not, who cares? The  songs are usually about things that anger us, but not limited to such.

Do you write your own material or mainly covers? Desecrator: Covers have been done, but mostly consists of original material.

Have you made any albums?/If yes what are they? Desecrator: Yes, we have 2 releases out, "Through The Pale Fog" and "Satanic Winter Rehearsal." We are also working on a split album with Canadian band  Lurid Reign which will be titled, "The Final Solution To The Human  Question" as well as a demo of re-recorded material with the current  lineup

Do you have any clips on YouTube? Desecrator: Yes

How old are you?/What got you started in music?

Desecrator: I am 27. I got inspired to start playing music because my  grandfather was a musician and I was always around music as a child. I remember seeing Kurt Cobain playing guitar on tv when I was a small child, as well as Dave Mustaine, Kirk Hammett, and James Hetfield and wanted to be like them. I had interest in playing guitar at an  early age, though I didn't pick it up until later. When I took more interest in thrash, that's when I needed to make it happen.

Lupus: I am 34. The fact that I got into performing music wasn't much of a  surprise since my father and uncle both played in bands from before I  was born. I grew up around music, so I naturally took to it.

At what age did you start playing?

Desecrator: I got a late start at 17

Lupus: I didn't get started playing guitar until I was 16. But I played  trumpet when I was 9 for a few years. I also wrote songs vocally around  that time.

How old were you guys when you first stood on stage?

Desecrator: My first stage appearance was at 17, during a school  project where everyone in the class took part in writing a few songs. I  only had a few months of experience, but managed to pull it off, despite extreme stage fright.

Lupus: The first time I performed instrumentally with any kind of adeptness  was when I was 9 and playing the trumpet in the school band. My brothers and I would perform songs for my family a cappella  when we were  younger. The first time I performed with a metal band was when I was 18.

What year was the band started? Desecrator:Ideas were present around 2008 or so, but didn't really get started until 2011

Best/worst gig you've played? Desecrator: That remains to be seen

What places will you be playing in in the imidate future? Desecrator: Wherever we can

Where have you played from then till now? Desecrator: As a band, we've only played once publicly, which was in  San Jose, California at The San Jose Rock Shop. It wasn't until recently I decided to bring this project out of the dark to start playing gigs

Which band is the best you've seen?

Desecrator: Watain, hands down! Sound-wise and performance-wise. They   are everything a black metal band should be in this day and age.

Lupus: I would have to say Dark Tranquility. After all these years, they still have amazing energy.

Is it always the same songs live?

Desecrator: Mostly will be for now...

Lupus: Hopefully that will change with us writing a lot of new material soon.

How big crowds do you usually play for? Desecrator: We shall see in the near future...

What are the plans for the rest of the year? Desecrator:Finish the recording process, get things released, continue on our black metal warpath

Where do you usually play? Desecrator: Anywhere we can, really

What are your goals with your music?

Desecrator: Continue on this endless journey. We will continue writing  and releasing music, showing that the essence of black metal will never  wither away. This is not about clinging onto the next biggest trend, but about being true to one's self. As long as I exist, so will this band .

Lupus: I think we just want to write music that we like. If others like it, they like it. If they don't, oh well.

When did you decide to go all in for the music?

Desecrator: The day I picked up my guitar, there was no turning back.

Lupus: Ditto.

Is it easier to get your inspiration from older bands or from bands more modern?

Desecrator: It really depends on the artist. Mostly first and second  wave black metal, but the thrash influences tend to show every now and  then.

Lupus: I'm a big fan of heavy music in general. I really draw inspiration from Old Man's Child, Gorgoroth. Borknagar, Watain, and stuff like that. I  also really am into the Gothenburg metal like Dark Tranquility,  Soilwork, In Flames, At The Gates, and The Haunted.

What are your sources of inspiration?

Desecrator: I can draw inspiration from nearly anything, but mostly hatred/disgust, life, and death.

Lupus: I usually try to find my angry place.

What's the first step when making a new song?

Desecrator: Usually starts with the music.

Lupus: Usually a guitar riff.

How do you feel about the downloading of music instead of buying albums?

Desecrator: I honestly prefer buying albums. With an album, you can appreciate all  the work and art that goes into it. Music, artwork, layout, etc... and  you can physically hold it in your hand and "own" it. Either way, you  can always buy albums online and have them delivered, and rip them into a computer if digital music is preferred.

Lupus: I agree with Desecrator. There's something infinitely more magical  about having a physical album, with all of the artwork and liner notes,  than downloaded music. With an album, you have the artwork and layout to help set the overall mood and sometimes that in itself is enough to  transport someone in their mind to a different place. Sometimes all you  need to do is look at an album cover and you hear the album in your  head. Or when you listen to the song, images of the album appear in your head. One day, kids won't have that kind of experience and connection  with their music that we all have had.

What would be your dreams for the band?

Desecrator: Play some gigs elsewhere, like Sweden, Norway, France, Finland, Germany, and Australia.

Lupus: Seeing the world while making savage music. Oh, and going to Disney World!

Besides your own music, what genres and bands do you listen to?

Desecrator:Mostly black metal, death metal, thrash, and various other genres you do not hear on a daily basis.

Lupus: Honestly, I listen to just about everything. But, usually, I listen to  metal. Gothenburg metal, melodic death metal, prog metal, power metal,  thrash, black metal, death metal, speed metal, heavy metal.... etc...

What do you hold most dear?

Desecrator:Individuality. To be true to one's self, walking your own path, even if it means walking alone.

Lupus: Individuality and creativity.

What would be your greatest fears for the future?

Desecrator: Nothing

Lupus: None.

When you are on stage, what do you fear most then?

Desecrator: Nothing.

Lupus: Desecrator fucking up!! J/k. Nothing.

Have you been part of any other projects?

Desecrator:I did guest vocals for my friend's project Encroaching Darkness on the song "Bringers Of The End"

Lupus: Nothing worth mentioning.

Have you been in any other bands?

Desecrator: A few, this was originally a side project of my own, and eventually became my main project.

Lupus: I've been in a few other bands.

What do you work with outside of the band and the music?

Desecrator:I work a regular job. Hours are usually flexible for me, which allows me to put more time and effort into this.

Lupus: I have a regular job, just like every other working stiff out there.

What would you do if there was no music?

Desecrator: I do have interest in art, so that would be most likely what I would do.

Lupus: I can't even imagine a world without music. I feel it keeps me sane. I  would probably do a bunch of psychotic shit if there wasn't music!

How important are your fans?

Desecrator: Fans are important, and always appreciated. I am not into  this for popularity, but I do greatly appreciate those who appreciate  what we do.

Lupus: Fans are always important. If there weren't any, we would just be  playing for ourselves. The music we make isn't intended to bring legions of fans to us. The music is our expression, our truth. If people like  it and feel it is their truth as well, then we are happy to play for  them.

How often do you rehearse? Desecrator: It varies due to schedules, but any chance we have, really

Where do you rehearse?

Desecrator: My chambers of chaos.

Lupus: More like Bed Chamber of Chaos!!

Name 2 of your own songs you like at the moment?

Desecrator: I am most proud of "Christian Slut" and "Heaven in Flames"

Lupus: Well, I really like "Legion" since I had a hand in that one... But, I also really like "Christian Slut" a lot.

What do you feel is the best live band you've seen?

Desecrator: Watain

Lupus: Dark Tranquility. Though, years ago Cradle of Filth put on a great show...

What drives a band that isn't all that famous and renowned to try to make a living on their music and to keep playing?

Desecrator: It goes beyond the music alone. It is who I am, a part of me.

Lupus: For me, it's like breathing. You may as well pull out my lungs and hang them out to dry before you will see me stop making music. It's in my  blood. Who I am. If you don't do it, you wouldn't understand.

Any pearls of wisdom for all other bands out there?

Desecrator: Beware of those maggots out there who claim to support music, but have  no other intentions than to rip you off. Do your research.

Lupus: Yeah, don't get taken advantage of. There are a lot of lazy people that want you to do all the work for them. Also, I would suggest staying  true to yourselves and don't lose sight of why you started playing music to begin with.

How do you view the music industry of today?

Desecrator: Negative... this dribble that everyone claims to be "music" of today, which is infested with pitch correction, and background music of other artists with different words over it, and "songs" where no   true instruments are played is NOT music! It also lacks depth, and I   choose to not be a part of all this garbage in which many call modern   "music." What happened to actually playing an instrument, writing lyrics that require some thought, and actually singing without pitch  correction... Where is the art?

Lupus: I think this "industry" is dying out slowly. Too long have they force  fed musical fads and trends just to make a buck. This led to a  relatively stagnant "pop" music pool from a creativity standpoint. I  think that too many people lost sight of or never knew that music is an  art form, not a business.

What advice would you like to give other bands?

Desecrator: Enjoy what you do and be true to yourself. If the passion  is not there, it will show. You do not always have to cling on to the  next biggest trend just to "fit in." Love what you do, there's always  someone out there who will enjoy it.

Lupus: Give a shit about what you create. Make music that comes from within,  and don't cater to anybody. If you make something that is true, others  will connect with you.

What are the biggest obstacles for a band?

Desecrator: Finding people on the same level as you are.

Lupus: Getting exposure and getting venue owners to take a chance on a band  that plays something new and fresh, and not just riding on the success  and creativity of others by playing only covers.

What is best/worst with playing the clubs?

Desecrator: Best: never know who will walk in and appreciate the music, and also watching all the mainstream-obsessed worms walk out! Ha!  Worst: double booking and getting shoved up in the attic to play a gig  that is basically non-existent to most, in other words, a waste of our  time.

Lupus: Desecrator pretty much said what I was thinking.

Tell us about upcomming gigs and why we should be at them? Desecrator: There is nothing currently scheduled, as we are working on  some new releases, but as far as why people should attend a gig... if you feel as we do about music or the fucked up industry, attend a gig and be a part of this war against what today's shit industry and modern "music" has become!

How would you describe your sound in one sentence?

Desecrator:A misanthropic assault of black metal warfare!

Lupus: Unrelenting, savage, sonic brutality... Hulk smash!!!

What is your favorite crappy instrument?

Desecrator: To me there is no crappy instrument. One can make music with anything if they are creative enough.

Lupus: As long as it can make music, it isn't crappy.

What was one of the most quarrelsome times for you in the band? Desecrator: None so far, all has been well

Whats your Pre-show ritual?

Desecrator: Gather all my inner feelings of my deepest hatred, prepare for our black metal assault

Lupus: I like to have a shot or two of Jack Daniel's to loosen up.

Do you have anything to add?

Desecrator: Keep supporting music! Death to religion! Hail chaos! FTW!!!

Lupus: What he said!
