interview with RATOS DE PORAO
How was the band formed? The RDP was formed in São Paulo Brazil in 1981 at the beginning of the Brazilian punk movement. It was the first band to make music hard core of south america. Our first album "CRUCIFICADOSpeloSISTEMA" was released in 1984. We have influences from bands from Sweden, Finland and England.
Can you tell about your band? We have 33 years of road never stopped playing, we have 13 studio albums, three live albums, some SPLITS and ep's. We sing in Portuguese and like to play fast.
Where are all band members from?/Who does what in the band?
The only original member is guitarist Jao. He has been vocal, drummer and plays guitar since 1986. I am the Fat vocalist since 1983. The Boka drummer joined in 1991. Juninho The bassist is playing with us 10 years.
What was the ambitions of the band when you started? We were punks. We had no future and no ambition. We wanted to play drinking beer and smoking marijuana. The Brazil in the 80s was a dictatorship was very difficult to have a punk rock band. The inntrumentos were very expensive and had a lot of repression.
Could you explain your music to someone that haven't heard you? We make a brutal mix of old school hard core crust with thrash metal. My lyrics have truths that disturb the common Brazilian citizen.
Where was your first gig? My first show with RDP was in a school in the suburb of São Paulo in 1983 to parents horrified and frightened children.
Where was the latest gig? My last show was August 30, 2014 in a big festival called "PORÃOdoROCK" in Brasilia the capital of Brazil for eight thousand people.
Who writes your songs?/Who writes the music who writes lyrics? I write 98% of the lyrics of the songs and I participate in 50% of riffs along with Jao and Boka.
Who has the best since of humor in the band? We are all very humorous. Maybe it makes us so many years to be together
