interview with Fake Heroes
How is it that you started playing music? We started this project 3 years ago. The basic idea was to create something new mixing alternative music with progressive.
This was very difficoult to realize in the first album because we had more influences by heavy rock music like Submersed, Alter Bridge and Creed.
Now, with our second album, we think we have hit our target and we believe a lot in it.
What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you?
Manuel Gatta - voice - 37
Gianni "Draft Djentleman" Vespasiani - guitar - 32
Simone "Roll" Del Libeccio - guitar - 31
Michele "Mike" Santoleri - drums - 20
Between a few days we'll share some news about our line up cause there are some new entries.
Have you had other previous members? Until a couple of weeks ago, our bass player was Francesco Cetrullo. Our paths are divided by differences. Our first drummer was Riccardo Ruiu that left Fake Heroes for a professional pop music project.
Did you make music even when you were young? Our main composer Gianni started early to make music, but he found his way only some years ago.
Where are you from? We are from Italy. We live in a city on the Adriatic seaside called Pescara.
What year did the band form? In February 2012
What's your style of genre? We started to play heavy rock/alternative. Then our sound has evolved in alternative/progressive with some djent shades.
What inspires you? We found inspiration from new prog/djent scene from all the world, mainly from Tesseract, Skyharbor, Circles, intervals, Periphery but Dead Letter Circus, Twelve Foot Ninja and many others too. Obviously we we tried our own sound that could be different from all music that we listen to.
How often and where do you rehearse? Our drummer Mike has a rehearsal room near his house. We spend about 6 hours in a week to play our music.
Everyone has a job that occupies enough during the week, but we try to devote more time to the music as possible.
How have you developed since you started with the music? The initial genre of the band was mainly heavy rock / nu metal, inspired by contemporary American bands. The entry of Mike brings new ideas and other influences to the band’s style, moving it towards progressive music.
Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? Yes, we are. we are looking for an agency that believes in us and is able to propose to our music in the right club in our country and abroad.
Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? we invest early in our project because we believe in it, but without the right hooks risk not having the real possibility of playing in the right places.
We are aware that our music is not for everyone but we are certain that there is an audience and expect something new in Italy.
What made you decide to make this music? We have not decided. We can say that it has selected us :)
What are your songs about? We tell about different themes: emotions, sensations, interior disease but also society and relationship between man, nature and progress. In our new album there is a song dedicated to Manuel's daughter called "My Guinea".
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? Main composer of the band is Gianni. He composes almost all music parts. Manuel writes some lyrics and some line vocals. Finally Simone and Mike treat some electronic parts
Do you start with the music or the lyrics? Gianni always starts from the music.
Have you done any covers live? just one, completely rearranged. It is part of our next show.
What language do you sing in? We choosed english language to spread our music abroad too.
What ages are most of your concert attendants? Between 20 and 30 years old.
Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? We like to change our set list but some songs are the same in every gigs.
Do you have a regular place you play live often? No, we haven't. Fortunately we played in different clubs or festivals.
What was your latest gig? We played in Zocca last month at the Freedom's Festival (Festa Della Libertà in italian)
Have you had to cancel a gig? Fortunately not far.
Where have you played live this year?
We played:
at Mark World Contest in march/april
at First May Concert in Chieti Scalo
at Freedom's Festival in Zocca (at the end of july)
We were very occupied with the new album so we had a few gigs.
Where do you plan to gig the comming year? We hope to play around Italy and to have some gigs in Europe.
When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? We started when the first album was out: t shirts and guitar picks. We're preparing new stuffs for the next album.
Where can people buy your merchandise? We have a store in BandCamp at https://fakeheroes.bandcamp.com
What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? Everything is changed. Also music business. This is a great trouble for us and all young bands because we have not enough money to invest in our music if we don't sells it.
So merchandising is the only thing that make us some money.
How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? Yes, of course. Labels, clubs, booking agencies... every step of the music business is changed after the internet download increase.
What do you think of my work? Your work is awesome! You spread and share mew music to all music lovers. It's a great thing for us little and unknown bands.
How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? Maybe some talent scout will listen to us and says oh fuck, this music is fuckin' awesome! If it happens we'll pay you.
Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? Absolutely we find new inspiration from contemporary bands.
What have been your biggest obstacles? Money and how people approach to music in Italy.
What advice would you give other bands or artists? If you believe in your music you must to invest on it. Don't wait for a miracle :)
How do you get psyched for a gig? relaxing and thinking to have fun
Do you have any new material? Yes. Our new album will be out at the end of September. So stay tuned!
