interview with SLUP
What´s the name of your band? The band is named SLUP.
How was the band formed? We started back in 1993 as a bunch of friends/brothers who loved skateboarding, drinkin´smokin ánd party like hell..... and found out that there is a thing called music we could also do together...
Where are all band members from?/Who does what in the band?
All Members grew up in Werne, a small town in the industrial area of germany called the Ruhrgebiet....
Bablz aka Thorsten Stratmann: Drums and Backings
Lars Kriegel aka Wanzt Kah: Bass and Backings
Jens Kriegel aka Jot Kah, Jeke, Gen Skreegl... (name changing due to Gemafuckupstress): Guitars and Vocals
and now after my brother Lars left the band back in 2009 due to family business, introducing Ana Laxersatz: Bass and Backings
aaaand very now:
Ben Hughes aka Angry Elvis of former BrandNewUnit and CatsGame,
our brother from Canada who just jumped on the bandwagon doing Vocals!!!
What was the ambitions of the band when you started? To become the leaders of the world, Masters of reality and most of all we were interested in having a blast and good times!!!
Where was your first gig?
First gig ever was back in 1993 at a friends place.... He had a big party going in his garden where a couple of bands played. We were the first band that evening...the youngsters.... I was 13 years old and it was my brothers 11th birthday.... our former drummer was already 28.....a grandpa from our point of view......Muhahaha... ( he left the band a year later and then Bablz snuggely fit in.... Funny thing about that show is that we got picked up afterwards by our parents who were quite confused when they saw the bunch of Punk Rockers hanging around, getting all boozed up or smokin big blunts or Waterpipes.....Wicked!!!
Where was the latest gig? On the 14th of Novembre at the Potemkin Bar in Bielefeld Germany.
Who writes your songs?/Who writes the music who writes lyrics?
Slup never sat down to write songs....we were jammin or sessioning all the time and Lars and Me picked out the best parts, bablz adding drums in his very own way, remembering em, and record it.....to cassette....Thats how most of the songs took place. and I wrote all the lyrics, starting with very weak english...but getting better at it through all the years!
Who has the best sense of humor in the band? We all together have this special kind of humor....its all about making fun of each other....especially when somebody passes out early (Bablz) ....who got painted all over his body, blackened teeth and a beard made out of Nutella and tobacco, several times! Also we liked playing naked, which got us into some problems with the feminist wing... Well, and I´m known for the abillity to create a clapping sound without using my hands.
What's good/bad with the band?/What genre do you feel you are?
After we toured with bands like Satanic Surfers, Trigger Happy, Brand New Unit and many others…I would call it Punk Rock…..
Good thing is that we still have hell of fun doing it. We travel the land, meeting new people and old friends..... We were just touring germany last June with Burn Hollywood Burn (friends from Vancouver, Can).
The only bad thing I can mention is that we just don´t get the attention we deserve after nearly 22 years of rockin´! But that´s music business....and so much I can say...We don´t give a shit! And we will carry on doing what we love most!!! MUSIC!!!
Why did you pick that particular style?/What are your songs about?
We never picked one particular style.....SLUP always played the music they wanted to....and that is Punk or Hardcore Punk for most of the time......but we also play country and western....
The songs are about my daily hustle, about what freaks me out, or what I do like. But its all about me ...
Do you write your own material or mainly covers? We never did a single cover version in 22 years of band history.....not live and also not at the rehearsal spot..... and we never will do!!!!!
Have you made any albums?/If yes what are they?
