interview with Bath Salt Zombies

Have any of you played in other bands?

Misael: Way too many to mention. The ones that come to mind were a ska-punk band that I used to play with Jerry and Antonio. The other one is Tavú where Joen is the guitarist.

Jerry: Unfortunately, hahahaha!  Nah, nah, but seriously, started playing drums when I was 14 for In Depth, then played in a punk band called ToyGun, switched to vocals in Zuper Ratón, then Maña Izquierdista, Evil Betty and finally Bath Salt Zombies.

How is it that you started playing music?

Misael: Bored. Rebel. A teenager that had nothing else to do. I got attracted towards the punk rock movement. I have several musician relatives from both my parents. It’s in the blood probably.

Jerry: With my hands! Hahahaha!

What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you? Misael, bassist, extra vocals, guitars, programming, mixing, drinking and whatnot. Jerry Joe, main vocals. Joen, guitars and extra vocals. Antonio, guitars and extra vocals. Danny, the new guy... drums. We are all in our 30s. Earlies, mids and late. We're all over the place.

Have you had other previous members? Nope! We’re all friends. There are no members in this project.

Did you make music even when you were young?

Misael: All the time.

Jerry: Even when I'm drunk.

Joen: Yup! Garbage cans and tins. FTW

Where are you from? That little island in the Caribbean called Puerto Rico.

What year did the band form? Misael: January 10, 2014. Jerry came out from the mental institution and him and I wrote that first song together... 'Eat Yo' Face'.

What's your style of genre? Misael: When Jerry came out with the band name, it just screamed “crossover” in my head. It’s thrash as it is very much punk. Although we do enjoy adding some other styles in there.

What inspires you?

Misael: With this thing is really an excuse to hang out with my friends. Drink way too many beers. Anything inspires me as much as watching the news as someone being dumb on social media and calling ‘em out with a song. But nothing is ever personal.

Jerry: DRUGS, idiocracy and maybe other shit too...

How often and where do you rehearse? We’ve never have rehearsed as a group. Let alone rehearse at all. We might change that in the future. We probably could not play the songs even if we wanted to. We write in the moment, record and move on to the next song . Whatever comes to mind, comes on tape. It’s almost like capturing that moment. We’re actually trying to build a zombie lair… a clubhouse where we can record and maybe rehearse.

How have you developed since you started with the music? Misael: Well, in the beginning there was just Jerry and I doing everything . Joen and Antonio came afterwards and it helped the music a whole lot since they are actual guitar players. I am mainly a bass player. I just played guitar to get songs going. Aside from the crossover thrash that we do, I feel that Joen brought more ambiance and groove. We always come up with some crazy, fucked up shit. Antonio brought  melody and a whole bunch of other things that I could’ve never done by myself.

Do you have other interests of work outside the band?

Misael: Family, beers and MMA fighting.

Jerry: Alter my mind, my crazy family, nature, extreme sports, porno.

Joen: We all work. Slave to the grind!

Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that?

Misael: It is not in my immediate future.

Jerry: I don't know... whatever the fuck happens, happens right?

Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? We didn’t, but the label found us. We have a great relationship. www.hotarex.com Label support is always a huge plus.

What made you decide to make this music?

Misael: I don’t even know how it has gone this far. No idea. It was supposed to be just 1 song and get it over with.

Jerry: Boredom to the fullest.

Joen: Boredom.

What are your songs about? Zombies (of course), politics, death, drugs, chics, alcohol, sex, insanity, being wasted, beer, bees, sickness and pretty much any case scenario with a zombie in it. All in all, whatever comes to mind.

Who does the composing and writes the lyrics?

Misael: Jerry writes most lyrics and I’ve done some. Sometimes I help Jerry. Joen and Antonio have done some lyrics with Jerry as well. We have no rules. We never say no to an idea. We can improve something, but I won’t shut down an idea.

Jerry: Everyone contributes something at some point of composing songs. Mainly I write most of the lyrics, but do enjoy everyone’s opinion and contributing as a group.

Joen: Whomever wants to sing!

Do you start with the music or the lyrics? Most of the time it’s the music. Sometimes we make the song and choose a random title from a list that we have. Sometimes we have an idea that we want to create based on a small lyric.

Do you compose in a certain environment?

Misael: Pretty much at my home, in my office. No bells and whistles. Nothing fancy. Under the influence of cold beers mostly.

Joen: Yes, we need to be drinking beer.

Have you done any covers live? Never played live.

What language do you sing in? English. There is some Spanish around some songs. We have an unreleased track in Portuguese and we also use a dab of Gibberish.

What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs?

Misael: 0 and 0

Jerry: Ghosts, Phantoms, Spirits, and the Wind

What ages are most of your concert attendants? Old enough to party.

Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? Some day we will let you know! XP

What was your first gig like? Jerry: Shittytastic!

Where have you played live this year? Jerry: The Lost City of Atlantis and The Bermuda Triangle

Where do you plan to gig the coming year? Jerry: To the other realms.

When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? Stay tuned for www.hotarex.com for more info.

Where can people buy your merchandise? So far the only physical merch is being produced by www.hotarex.com

What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records nowadays?

Misael: Do whatever makes you happy. I do both. And we give our music for free to begin with. If you really dig our music, support our label and ask them for physical packages with goodies. The people from our label are awesome and it would mean a lot if you reach out to them.

Jerry: We actually don't give a fuck! Hahahaha!

Joen: Doesn't matter. Making money is hard enough. At least making music is not super expensive like it used to and most people can home record, so whatever.

How do you think the music industry have changed because of this?

Misael: Man, I have no idea.

Jerry: I think it’s pretty amazing, for the good and the bad.

Joen: Well the thing is now corporations can't suck the money out of the good bands and the good bands are mostly independent nowadays so it has been good and bad at the same time.

What do you think of my work?

Misael: It’s cool that you’re doing this. Sounds weird but things like this connects people on a global scale. Keep up the good work!

Jerry: It's way better than cleaning shit.

How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business?.

Misael: I really just want more people to listen to the songs and laugh with us. That being said 1,000,000,000 fans or 20 fans don’t make a difference. I would still be doing this with my brother and my best friends.

Jerry: Hey! If it works, you have to come down and party with us!

Do you have any role models or idols?

Misael: None

Jerry: Dora The Explorer

Why do you think that they exist?

Misael: Their parents had unprotected sex.

Jerry: They exist because if not, they don't exist.

Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today?

Misael: It goes both ways.

Jerry: I could say it goes both ways.

Joen: Both. Older bands are classics and the newer bands are classics in the making so you can find inspiration in both.

What have been your biggest obstacles?

Misael: With BSZ? Getting the 5 of us lunatics in a room together… sober.

Jerry: Trying to masturbate with my left hand.

Joen: Making money so we can play more and make a lot more music.

What advice would you give other bands or artists?

Misael: Do this for fun mainly and get bandmates that are true friends. You have to get along and have fun. It really sucks playing music with assholes. If something cool happens, great. But don’t expect anything or everything. Do your thing and things might come when you least expect it. If you want to do music for life, work extra fucking hard.

Jerry: JUST DO IT! -Shia Labeouf

Joen: If you want to make money, play covers or study and get a gig with a famous pop artist. Otherwise don't expect money 'cause it's hard to make it as a musician and especially in rock.

How do you get psyched for a gig?

Misael: Haven’t gigged in almost 15 years.

Jerry: If shit gets out of control.

Do you have any new material?

Misael: We released ‘Some Bees’ on July 7th. It has 11.5 songs. Symbolically hating our 11.5% local sales tax increase. That’s 11 1-minute songs and a 30 second song! Ha! We’re planning to release an EP in August.

Jerry: yessir

Joen: Every week.

How can people reach you? On the mentioned websites above!

What are your plans for the future?

Misael: Aside from your typical world domination, we have dozens of ideas lying around that we want to record. We are trying to set up a recording studio for ourselves where we can record ideas without time constraints. Also that would be great so we can try at last a rehearsal.

Jerry: Try to eat Stephen Hawkin’s brain.

Do you have something to add?

Misael: A special shout out to all the friends that have collaborated over the last year and a half. Juan, Joel, Yogi, Hecmar, Robert, Mando, Manny, Ariel. Hails to Heavy Metal Historian, Mr. Greg Davies for your support! We told you that we’re forever grateful! http://heavymetal666.com/  To my wife and kid, thanks for putting up with my shit. Love to my parents, my older brother, my in-laws and all of the people that have taken a second to check us out, has laughed a bit or we've made their day better with our music. Thanks a lot! And thank you, Robex!

Jerry: Hi mom! Hi dad! I'll make you proud someday! Hahahahaha! Hi to the Fret and Molina families. My 3 special loving creatures I have at home, Dariana, Jerico, Johnelis. The fuckers that contribute to our releases; you know who you guys (or bitches) are! Plus the shit Misael already told.

PS: This music is intended for assholes, fuckers, dickholes, kicks & gigles. We strive not to offend anyone, but if you are, then you're such a little pussy. You should go and suck a camel's cock and die from aids... fuck yeah.!.. -BSZ
