interview with UNEVEN STRUCTURE
Have any of you played in other bands? Matthieu (singer) and Jean (drummer) played in the band Ananta. For the rest of the band, we have almost all played in local bands before starting Uneven Structure.
How is it that you started playing music? I was around 17/18 years old when I've started playing music. I was listening to a lot of bands since some years and I wanted to do my own things. So a friend show me how to play guitar and I fell in love with this instrument!
What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you?
Igor Omodei - guitar
Aurélien Pereira - guitar
Jérôme Colombelli - guitar
Matthieu Romarin - singer
Benoit Friedrich - bass
Jean Ferry - drum
Have you had other previous members? Our first drummer was Christian Schreil. A swedish guy who played with us during one year in 2011. He play now in Means End. We had also Daniel Adel from Vildhjarta as "session singer" on the very first version of our EP "8" released in 2009.
Where are you and what year did the band form? We are all from France but in different cities. Some are from the south of France and others from the north. The band started in early 2009 when we all met together. We were all searching to do the kind of music we're playing now and we found each others by internet when MySpace was the king of social networks!
What's your style of genre? We are often related to the "djent genre" because we have played a lot with bands like this before and also because of some elements in our music. Of course we are big users of low tuning and polyrythms but this is just a part of our music. Our songs are always writen in a "progressive way" and with a lot of place for ambient sounds and post-rock guitars. So yeah if I have to stick a label on what we play I guess it's "progressive post metal".
What inspires you? Of course a lot of music inspires us. Bands like Tool, Meshuggah, Karnivool, Pearl Jam, Deftones, Rosetta and also artists like Trent Reznor, Devin Townsend, Bjork. But music is not the only source of inspiration for us. We also imagine our music and albums as stories so cinema is a good inspiration for us.
Do you have other interests of work outside the band? Outside the band we have of course some working activities. For example Igor realises videos for other bands and Matthieu and Aurélien are mixing and mastering albums for other artists.
Are you looking for a booking agency/label, and what are your thoughts around that? Hopefully we have both. We signed with Basick Records in 2011. They released our first album and we'll do the second with them also. We're touring with HiBooking agency for Europe.
What are your songs about? Each album or EP tells a story. For example 8 speaks of a monk questioning his faith and Februus chronicles the life of an entity that discovers its own existence , powers and seeking to accomplish. The next album "La Partition" will also tell a story but for now I can't say more it's a secret ;-)
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? The composing is mainly done by Igor. The others brings ideas on his compositions. He also write lyrics with our singer Matthieu. The writing of ambient parts is done by Aurelien.
Do you start with the music or the lyrics? Actually we start with music and an idea of a story for the album. We work first on the music and when we have something coherent we write lyrics.
Have you done any covers live? Never. That's something we would like to do. We have some ideas for a cover in the future.
Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? We try to vary. But actually it mainly depends of how much time given to us for playing... We have a kind of typical set but we try to change it regularly. We don't want to give the people the feeling that they always see the same show.
Do you have a regular place you play live often? People knows that we often play at Euroblast festival in Köln in Germany. We made there our first ever gig in 2010. People of Euroblast Collective loves us and we love them! So each year it's a special moment to be there and see old friends with who we played before.
Where have you played live this year? We didn't play live this year because we wanted to finish the next album. Wich takes a huge time.
Where do you plan to gig the comming year? We will play again in September. We have already some gigs booked. The next album will be released before the end of 2015 so there will be a lot of gigs to support it. Some announcements will come soon.
What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records nowadays? I think that we just have to deal with it. This have changed Music industry forever and it will never be possible go back in the past. Of course you sell less music but on the other side there is more music to listen today than in the past thanks to Internet. And to be honest I don't think we would have achieved all that we done with Uneven Structure without Internet. For exemple when we released the first version of our EP "8" we decided to let it free to download and it have been a success that permit us to be quickly in contact with labels and promoters.
Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? Both. Older bands are those who have made you wanted to do music so they will always be a part of your inspiration. But I think it's also very important to be open to new bands and music. As an artist I can't always do the same things and I don't want it.
What have been your biggest obstacles? Our biggest obstacle was to create Uneven Structure. We all wanted to make this kind of music before being in this band but we had to find each others first.
What advice would you give other bands or artists? Play with musicians that have the same vision of music as you. And all you can do yourself do it yourself. There is too much intermediary in music business.
How do you get psyched for a gig? Beer.
Do you have any new material? Yes. We're actually working on our next album. It will be called "La Partition" and should be released before the end of this year. You will feel a big evolution between Februus and La Partition. It will sound more like an album of "accomplished musicians". We tried to push extremes further compare to februus. Violent parts will be really violent and ambient / progie parts will be more evolved than before. The album will be a massive unique song like in Februus. We're also working on a special package to make it look like a book.

We have a website: http://www.unevenstructure.net

What are your plans for the future? touring touring touring... everywhere!
Do you have something to add? thall.
