interview with Arbor Mortis

What´s the name of your band? The bands name is “Arbor Mortis” which means in latin “The Tree of Death”.  The inspiration for the name of band came from “Arbor Vitae” – “The Tree of Life” and we wanted to make some opposition of that.  There is no peace without war and no life without death.  Death is another form of life and so if there is a Tree of Life so there should be Tree of Death actually.

How was the band formed? The band was formed in 2013 as studio project but after we decided to complete the band with other musicians and so the band formed. We wanted to show the beauty of depression, sorrow, melancholy and other dark sides of life that people don’t notice that all and try to avoid it. There are a lot of examples when artists who feel all that tortures of soul create masterpieces. So our inspiration come from pain. Pain is very important feeling that makes people to get more mature.

Where are all band members from?/Who does what in the band? We have 3 main musicians. Vahan Sarhatyan (Neang) vocals and guitar, Sona Shekoyan (Siothany) vocals and keyboards, Arthur Poghosyan (Satan) on drums. Avo Taloyan – guitar, Carlos – guitar and Mihran – bass guitar. All members are from Armenia.

Where was your first gig? It was at Headbanger Club in Yerevan.

Where was the latest gig? It was in Uptown music club again in Yerevan.
Who writes your songs?/ Who writes the music who writes lyrics? We all create our music, but lyrics writes Vahan(Neang).

What genre do you feel you are? We play black metal music and our all songs have their own unique subgenres. We write our songs in different emotions and we can’t control our feelings, that’s why we don’t concentrate on only one genre. We use everything that Black Metal is.
Why did you pick that particular style?/What are your songs about? We choose black metal not only because we love that music. Black metal is the only genre for us that we can use as a method to introduce our feelings and ideas to people.
Our songs are about all emotions that human can feel.

Do you write your own material or mainly covers? We write our own material but sometimes we do some covers just for live performances.
Have you made any albums?/If yes what are they? Yes, sure. We have already two albums. The first one was out in 2014 called “Embla” which was about the dark side of human path of life. The second one came out in 2015 called “Prophet” which is more heavy than previous one and is about more abstract things that surround us and wait for us after life.

How old are you?/What got you started in music? We are from 18-24 years old. We were all born in music.  From childhood we all were listening to rock music and when we grew up and decided that we can’t keep in us our emotions we started introducing it by the thing that we are in love with – music.
Best/worst gig you've played? We had only two concerts yet. Both concerts were cool but we hope and we will do everything to make all further concerts better than previous ones.

Which band is the best you´ve seen? For different members were Melechesh, Saturnus, Orphaned Land.

Is it always the same songs live? We had two gigs, as I already told, and songs were the same. But the next concert that we will have will be different. We will play songs mainly from second album and maybe a couple of from Embla.

How big crowds do you usually play for? We couldn’t count, sorry. But not less than 200.
What are the plans for the rest of the year? We are planning to have a couple of concerts here in Yerevan and why not in Georgia. Also we are planning to record a new album this year.

Is it easier to get your inspiration from older bands or from bands more modern? It depends. We don’t think about it. Yes we have favorite bands and mostly they are old stuff, but we don’t give a big attention to that creating our music.
What's the first step when making a new song? First we make a melody for the song. We create a main melody for the song then we fill in other instruments and fig up with some shades.

What would be your dreams for the band? We would like to get more popular, hold a lot of concerts. Also we would like to take part at huge metal festivals. Sure we will do our best to reach all we want.

Besides your own music, what genres and bands do you listen to? We mostly like black metal music. Also our drummer creates some dark ambient music and he likes electronic music besides black metal. We don’t restrict us and we like everything that is good.

Have you been part of any other projects? Vahan and Sona are playing also in other band called Pantheon of Despair. They play doom, death metal. Arthur, our drummer, plays in Araspel as a drummer, The Windrose as a percussionist and he has also dark ambient project called Project MK-Ultra.

How often do you rehearse? As often as it possible.

Name 2 of your own songs you like at the moment? Spoken Word and Ego sum Deus from our second album “Prophet”

Do you have any webpages? We are registered only on facebook and youtube. We don’t have special Arbor Mortis webpage.

What is best/worst with playing the clubs? It is difficult to set really good sound in clubs and it is difficult to make good and impressive show.  But there is another good thing, that in clubs the contact with people is much closer than on bigger stages. That gives us huge energy to give more drive to the show.

How would you describe your sound in one sentence Quote: “When night falls she cloaks the world in impenetrable darkness. A chill rises from the soil and contaminates the air. Suddenly... life has new meaning.”
What is your favorite crappy instrument? Organ.
