interview with Os Pazuzus

What is the name of your band? Os Pazuzus.
What does the name "Os Pazuzus" stand for? In Assyrian and Babylonian mythology, Pazuzu was the king of the demons of the wind. He also represented the southwestern wind, the bearer of storms and drought.
What made you call the band "Os Pazuzus"? We had a hardcore band before called COISA RUIM, a Brazilian slang for "devil". So I guess we like demon related band names.
How was the band formed? As I said, we played together before, but this band COISA RUIM finished, so we decided to star a new project.
What made you form the band? Basically the main reason was we were listening to more and more Man or Astro-man? songs while driving to our old hardcore shows.
Can you briefly introduce your band and who you are? In 2004, when four employees of IBM (Portuguese for Institute of Marine Biology - do not confuse with the computer company) theorized about the monotony of sea life from the waters of Guanabara Bay, no one could have thought that such calm days were counted. The tsunami of sound that was to come borrowed its name from an old project of the institute guarded until the early twenty-first century: Project of Atomic Zoomorphism in Unfavorable Zones Under the Sea. Or simply, PAZUZUS. Gradually the sound waves from the institute's sonars began losing ground to the sound of the reverberating guitars of the newly formed group. Instead of test tubes, amp valves. Instead of endless research and complicated reports, rock records. Or rather, INSTRO SURF ROCK records!
Where are all bandmembers from?/Who does what in the band? The actual line-up is: Delphyus 7J - bass; Mútiro - guitar; El - guitar; Dimas, o Rei das Rimas - Drums. We are all from Rio de Janeiro.
What was the ambitions of the band when you started? Recording a demo as an excuse to drink beer along the recording session.
Could you explain your music to someone that haven't heard you? Sci-fi instro surf with odd, still catchy melodies.
Where was your first gig? Belo Horizonte.
Where was the latest gig? Rio de Janeiro.
Who writes your songs?/Who writes the music who writes lyrics? Mainly myself Delphyus 7J and sometimes our lead guitar player Mútiro. We ain't got many lyrics.
Who has the best since of humor in the band? I guess we all share a good dose of dark, cynical, pessimistic and sick humor.
What's good/bad with the band?/What genre do you feel you are?
We have a lot of fun when we are together because we are old friends and our shows are intense,
but we don't play many gigs since this is a really obscure side project. We are an instro surf
band with lots of punk rock influences.
Why did you pick that particular style?/What are your songs about? Reverb guitars make us feel stoned. Our songs are all about our sci-fi parallel reality.
Do you write your own material or mainly covers? We write our own material.
Have you made any albums?/If yes what are they?
A MALDIÇÃO DO SURF SUMÉRIO - 2006
HIBERNATION DEVICE TURNOFF!!! - 2011
Do you have any clips on YouTube?
A DANÇA DO SURFISTA FANTASMA - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTkBjJYesBc
LA DIABOLICA - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDIJlppOpsU
20.000 HZ SUBMARINOS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JZBMHUAKIE
How old are you?/What got you started in music? I am 30. Our oldest player is Mútiro, 38. My mother is a piano player and my father was an Elvis, Beatles and Rolling Stones fan. Music has always been part of my life.
At what age did you start playing? I started playing the bass at high school at the age of 16.
How old were you guys when you first stood on stage? I was 23 at the first Pazuzus gig.
What year was the band started? 2004.
How old were you the first time you saw a liveband play? I was probably 16.
How old were you at your first gig?/Best/worst gig you've played? I did my first gig at 18. Our best shows were at Primeiro Campeonato Mineiro de Surfe, an instro surf festival that happens every year in the city of Belo Horizonte. That's where we played our first gig.
What places will you be playing in in the imidate future? Probably in our hometown Rio de Janeiro.
Where have you played from then till now? In many cities from the states of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Minas Gerais, here in Brazil.
What songs are in your live set's? The songs from our demo, our EP, the songs from our coming full lenght and some covers from MOAM?, The Ventures etc.
Is it always the same set's live? No, we try to change it from one gig to another.
What has been the best/most promising gig so far? The gig in São Carlos, hometown of The Dead Rocks. It was great playing with them at their hometown.
Have you had any bigger tours from start till now? No, we are a small unknown band.
How big crowds do you usually play for? From 20 to 200 people.
What are the plans for the rest of the year? Well, it's December 28th today. Still got 3 days to pour some Heinekens in my mouth before 2014.
Where do you usually play? Mainly at our hometown Rio de Janeiro.
How do you get psyched up for a gig? Beer, beer and ahn... Beer! OK... sometimes wine.
What are your goals with your music? Having a good time and getting a couple of smiles from surf music fans.
When did you decide to go all in for the music? Right after I slipped on an old banana peel and banged my head against the hard concrete.
Is it easier to get your inspiration from older bands or from bands more modern? Don't really know. It's easier to get inspiration from good bands. I believe there are only really two kinds of music: good music and bad music.
What are your sources of inspiration? Catchy, dark, odd melodies. From Dick Dale to Slayer.
What's the first step when making a new song? Recording the melody you are thinking of. Otherwise it is a matter of time before it goes to the limbo of forgotten melodies.
How do you feel about the downloading of music instead of buying albums? It's a reality we can't fight against. I think of it as a good stuff, since it makes it easier to access all sorts of music.
What would be your dreams for the band? Turning into a cool ratpack of elderly surf freaks.
Besides your own music, what genres and bands do you listen to? Lots of punk rock, harcore and Jamaican music.
What do you hold most dear? Friendship and music.
What would be your greatest fears for the future? I don't know... Maybe having to move to another town and not being able to play with the guys.
When you are on stage, what do you fear most then? No fear onstage, only a good clean fun time.
Have you been in any other bands? Yeah, right now in NORTE CARTEL, a hardcore band from Rio de Janeiro.
What would you do if there was no music? I would be an ornithologist so I could hear the birds.
How important are your fans? Knowing new people that sometimes happen to like our songs because of its oddity is definitely the coolest part of playing in this band.
What's the funniest/most memorable thing a fan has done for you? Once a kid bought me a beer. It was cool! Then the guy at the bar asked me for the money, since the kid had not payed for it...
How often do you rehearse? Generally one day before the gig. hehehe
Where do you rehearse? At an improvised studio at my place.
Name 2 of your own songs you like at the moment? 20.000 Hz Submarinos and Operation Condor 9.
Do you have any webpages? www.facebook.com/ospazuzus
Any pearls of wisdom for all other bands out there? Never give up. Never.
Would you like to add anything else? Thanks for the opportunity and surf's up!
