interview with Goytacá

Have any of you played in other bands?

Leon: Yes, i’ve played in two different bands. Demilitia a thrashmetal old school band where i did vocals and the lead guitar. And a band with the cheesy name „Red Carpet Section“ in which we did some sort of Jazz/Funk/Pop thing.

Jan: I acctually played in one grunge band and in somekind of new metal band which was formed by myself and a friend of mine before.

When that band started to break up I started playing bassguitar at Goytacá.

Antonio: Yes, everyone from us has already played in some other band. I played in one Hard Rock, Punk Band, but I always wanted to play harder music and then I was looking for other musicians to play with until Goytaca was founded.

How is it that you started playing music?

Leon: When i was in the third grade during elementary school i wanted to learn either bagpipes or guitar. Of cource my parents were not delighted to hear me practising the bagpipe every day so i began taking lessons in guitar.

Jan: I´m not sure. A couple of friends of mine were playing in different bands. Most of them played guitar or drums. So maybe I was thinking that it would be handsome to play bassguitar when I was between 16 and 17.

Antonio: A couple of my Portuguese friends from school decided to establish a band. At that time we had only cheap instruments and my first drums consisted of a bucket and self-made sticks, till I bought normal drums for 50€ from a friend.

What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you?

Leon: My Name is Leon Enste and i play the leadguitar and do the backing vocals. I am 25 years old.

Jan: Jan Lewandowski, 22 years old, Bassguitar

Antonio: Antonio Teixeira de Oliveira, 25 years old, Drums

Ivan: Ivan Almeida, vocals, guitars, 24

Have you had other previous members? Leon: Yes! Even though Ivan, Antonio and I began practising during spring 2011 we often had problems in finding a bass player. We had three previous bass players.

Did you make music even when you were young?

Leon: I did not write my own music when i began playing the guitar but from the age of 15 on i began to write songs.

Jan: I didn´t.

Antonio: Ehm, no, I started with 16 years.

Where are you from?

Leon: I am from Essen in Germany.

Jan: I was born and raised in germany.

Antonio: I come from Brasil, I was born in Maceio and when I was 11, I moved to Germany.

What year did the band form? Leon: I think Ivan and Antonio founded the band in 2010. I joined them in 2011 and our bass-player Jan completed the group in early 2012.

What's your style of genre?

Leon: I would describe it as progressive or technical death metal with many acoustic and instrumental parts.

Ivan: Death Thrash Metal

What inspires you?

Leon: Musicians from different centuries and different countries. On the one hand raw aggressive death or thrash metal and on the other hand classical pieces like the firebird from Igor Stravinsky. One major source of inspiration are books.

Jan: My own life and the experiences I make.

Antonio: In fact, our mad world, expierences from everyday life, musicians and metal.

How often and where do you reherse?

Leon: We reherse two times a week. I try to play the guitar at least 1 or 2 hours each day.

Jan: We meet two times the week for rehearsals.

In my freetime I ain´t follow a fixed plan concerning rehearsals. It changes month by month. Sometimes i practice everyday and some other month only a few hours.

Antonio: I rehearse from 2 to 4 times a week, if it´s not so hard at my work and when I am enough motivated. It is really necessary for me to rehearse often, because if not, then I start to notice that it becomes more complicated to play the songs.

How have you developed since you started with the music?

Leon:I think that i became less egoistic in the process of songwriting and i hope that i became better at playing the guitar.

Jan: Goytacá has become more technically and multifaced in his own very stile of writing

Concerning myself, it Goytacá gave me the possibility to developed myself in many different ways.

Antonio: I have personally developed a lot, and it becomes better, faster, more precise. The band feels united, together sweated, you feel you can rely upon each other on the stage.

Do you have other interests of work outside the band?

Leon: Plenty. Thai-Boxing, reading, beer

Jan: I´m still not settled, but what I want now is playing bassguitar in Goytacá.

Antonio: I wanted before to become an artist,  it worked actually, but in the moment I don´t want it.

Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? Leon: If booking agency means that we would have gigs every weekend then yes of  course we would like to have a professional booking agency doing this kind of work.

Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that?

Leon: If we don’t have to change our style of music and don’T have to wear the same shitty clothes which Trivium wore during their In Waves promotion then yes we’d like to be part of a metallabel.

What made you decide to make this music?

Leon: The pure and overwhelming feeling you get while you are on stage and the satisfaction when weeks of songwriting fit in together perfectly to create a awesome song and good atmosphere.

Antonio: It has to do with experiences and feelings, and so it developed.

What are your songs about? Leon: It depends. Some songs like Furor Teutonicus or the song Goytacá just try to tell stories of ancient german or brazilian tribes. Songs like Keine Toleranz are hateful towards dogmatic believers and our song Porrada is a song against racism. I think we like to write songs about nower day topics which piss us of.

Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? Leon: Most oft he lyrics are written by Ivan. The lyrics and guitar for Keine Toleranz are written by me. Usually the songs start with the guitar riffs. Most of the guitar riffs are „composed“ by Ivan or me.

Do you start with the music or the lyrics? Leon: Usually with the guitar riffs.

Do you compose in a certain inviroment? Leon: No. But i would allways prefer to compose in a calm and nice atmosphere somewhere outside.

Have you done any covers live? Leon: Once we covered songs like Roots Bloody Roots by Sepultura or the Power Rangers Theme Songs but normally we just play our own stuff on stage.

What language do you sing in? Leon: Most oft the songs are written in english. One in portugues and one in german. I’d like to have more german and portugues songs.

What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs?

Leon: The least 2 the most ca. 60 i guess.

Antonio: It is different, but the most of them are metal lovers.

What ages are most of your concert attendants?

Leon: Between 15 and 55

Antonio: 20- 40- 50

Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? Leon: We allways play the same shit over and over and over again! Just until we’ll write a new song.

Do you have a regular place you play live often? Leon: Not really.

What was your first gig like?

Leon:Stunning. It was an awesome feeling and there were more than 10 people listening.

Antonio: It was really cool, but inside it felt like the energy that you are not able to control, all the muscles were as hard as concrete, but then, during the gig, one finds his rage. When it came to the end, I thought less and everything was then so fast!!

What was your latest gig?

Leon: Nice atmosphere, good sound but not so many visitors.

Antonio: It was really good, intensive, but good, because I needed a lot of time to get warm.

Have you had to cancel a gig? Leon: Yes, because i had to finish my bachelor thesis.

Where have you played live this year? Leon: Most of the time in Northrhine-Westphalia in germany  in several towns like for example Monheim am Rhein, Siegen or Duisburg.

Where do you plan to gig the comming year?

Leon: Still in germany but mayby also belgium or the netherlands.

Antonio: Wacken , Hellfest  hahaha!

When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? Leon: We will start selling merch within the next weeks. We’ll be offering two different t-shirts, stickers and our new ep.

Where can people buy your merchandise? Leon: They can contact us and order the stuff over our facebook-account.

What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records nowadays? Leon: I think downloading music is just thievery which is more or less accepted within our societies. If i go to a store and steal a record everyone will go nuts but if i download it and even tell it family members, friends or even colleagues no one will care. If someone has enough money to buy a burger king menu instead of an album, he should buy the album! Only if you are really poor and neither you nor your family can afford buying music then i think it should be allowed to download music withough paying.

How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? Leon: The margin from the record sales dropped even for the bigger bands. Nowadays it seems to be that young bands have to tour more and sell more merch and „record less“ economically speaking.

What do you think of my work? Leon: I think it’s aweseome that you give young bands from the underground the opportunity to have an interview with you. And that metal- and musicblogs in general are a enrichment for the music scene.

How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? Leon: Maybe some people in sweden or from other places over the world will read this and give us a chance an listen to our music or come to our shows ;)

Do you have any role models or idols? Antonio: I guess, one should have himself as a role model, because a human always want to be the best and to become a better musician. igor cavalera und max : Sepultura, Soulfly, Cavalera Conspiracy  , eloy  casagrande: Sepultura , aquiles priester: hangar , max kolesne : Krisiun , george Kollias : Nile , Joao Gordo: Ratos de Porao .gavin harrison : porcupine tree

Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? Antonio: The old school has classic, blues, jazz and I think the musicians were more in the music,

What have been your biggest obstacles? Antonio: They are still ahead.

What advice would you give other bands or artists?

Leon: I think we are not big enough or experienced  yet to give other bands some advices.

Antonio: Not to give up until not tried everything possible.

How do you get psyched for a gig?

Leon: By playing with our tour-football and drinking beer. Even though most of time i am the driver. And of course warm up playing.

Antonio: At first we do a warm-up: everybody does it differently, I do some stretching or kickboxing exercises, then I rehearse with my hocker, and certainly I prepare myself internally.

Do you have any new material?  Leon: Yes, we will release our new ep in the next weeks.

What are your web sites? Leon: Until now just our facebooksite à facebook.com/goytaca

How can people reach you? Leon: The easiest way is by facebook or eMail [email protected]. But also by contacting our gigmit-account -> gigmit.com/goytaca

What are your plans for the future?

Leon: To record our first album in 2016 and to play more gigs in general.

Antonio: Keep on and stay strong!

Do you have something to add? Leon: Thank you for your interest in our band and the opportunity to have this interview!
