Interview with Temblad

Have any of you played in other bands? The Fascination, Love the City and Space, Damnation, Subterranean Horses, Catalyst

How is it that you started playing music? I like hitting things. I got my first drum set when I was a freshman in high school. By that time I was listening to a lot of heavier rock and a lot of punk too. Then I really got into metal. If there was one band that really influenced me to want to be a rocker, it would be Nirvana.

What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you? Marlon Matthew, Drums, 32

Have you had other previous members?David Calhoun (Bass), Kevork Shoehmelian (Guitar), Luis Soraire (Bass)

Did you make music even when you were young? On my cousins Little Miss Piggy keyboard. yes.

Where are you from?San Diego, CA

What year did the band form? 2010

What's your style of genre? Extreme death/thrash for the most part

What inspires you? Music, the World, positive energy

How often and where do you reherse? We rehearse at a practice space located across from a tweeker motel, as infrequently as we can.

How have you developed since you started with the music? I got better at blasting and metal drumming in general. Lorenzo really pushed me in the beginning. Now I push him.

Do you have other interests of work outside the band? I am currently pursuing my education, so I am really just focusing on that and music. I generally try to jam with different musicians whenever possible.

Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? No, I just want to be involved in something that people will want to listen to, and let all that other business stuff fall into place later, if it even gets to that point. We are just really focused on making our upcoming album the best that it can be right now.

Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? Not at the moment. Maybe later when our album is done. We don't have a full band right now either but it seems we can get away with just playing two-piece live right now.

What made you decide to make this music? When I first really got into Slayer, I was dead set on learning how to play thrash metal style drums. Then I got into Cannibal Corpse and then I was a full-blown metalhead from that point.

What are your songs about? I wrote lyrics for only two songs in the band so far. One was about gambling addiction, and another was about how women can be evil bitches sometimes.

Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? It is all Lorenzo. He also programs the drums and sends me songs to learn, then I adapt the drumming more to my preferences and we structure the songs further from there and get things finalized. I try to help with lyrics when I can but it is totally his department.

Do you start with the music or the lyrics? Music

Do you compose in a certain inviroment? Sometimes Lorenzo and I jam at the practice space and write stuff that way but mainly Lorenzo writes the music in his little home studio. He calls it Grindzik.

Have you done any covers live? Death - Left to Die, Deicide - Dead but Dreaming, there are videos on youtube of us playing these songs. Lorenzo and I play a bunch of covers at the studio from bands like Slayer, Coroner, Sepultura, etc...

What language do you sing in? English

What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? We have played to small crowds mainly. Haven't been on too many bigger shows except the one with Origin, Cattle Decapitation, Disgorge and more in San Diego.

What ages are most of your concert attendants? 21+, usually in the 30s

Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? We try to vary with what we have and introduce new songs into the set but we mainly have the staple songs that always get played.

Do you have a regular place you play live often? Til-two club, The Merrow

What was your first gig like? It was a lot of fun. IT was a fundraiser show for the local sdmetal swap meet.

What was your latest gig? We played in Tijuana with Shit for their album release show.

Have you had to cancel a gig? Yes, I broke my leg before a show.

Where have you played live this year? At the Casbah, The Merrow, and La Prision Bar

Where do you plan to gig the comming year? Brick by Brick, Til-Two Club, and anywhere else if they want us.

When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? About a year ago, we got some shirts made, and we had cds of Mockery of the Fanatic, our EP, available for a while now, but we only have a few left.

Where can people buy your merchandise? On our online merch store, temblad.bigcartel.com

What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? I don't mind it honestly. If it helps get my music heard then I am all for it.

How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? It has really hurt record stores and put them out of business. Going to the record store was the coolest thing and now we don't really have that anymore unless you live somewhere cool.

What do you think of my work? I don't know anything of your work.

How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? I don't think or know that this interview will help me in the music business. The only think I think that will help me now is the release of our album.

Do you have any role models or idols? My biggest idol growing up was Kurt Cobain but since then I would have to admit that Dave Lombardo has been my biggest inspiration.

Why do you think that they exist? Humans wouldn't survive without them.

Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? For me it is about older bands/older albums. The more modern stuff doesn't do as much for me.

What have been your biggest obstacles? Probably the number 1 obstacle in my life has been alcohol. Now my number 1 obstacle is school.

What advice would you give other bands or artists? Simple = Better

How do you get psyched for a gig? I try not to get psyched. I just try to be relaxed and confident. If I am too psyched I might start playing too fast.

Do you have any new material? Yes. Two new songs that take the band in new directions. The songs are more complex and less generic.

What are your web sites? www.temblad.com

How can people reach you? [email protected]

What are your plans for the future? Study abroad in Chile in 2016, so the band will hopefully have the album mixed and mastered by then and while I am gone Lorenzo can work with any potential bass-players or guitarists.

Do you have something to add? Thank you for the interview!
