interview with Entartung
Have any of you played in other bands? Vulfolaic: Yes, both of us have active and still are active in several other bands and projects.
How is it that you started playing music? Lykormas: More than a few decades ago AC/DC inspired me to pick up the guitar.
What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you? Vulfolaic: We call ourselves Lykormas, Haistulf and Vulfolaic. We all are at the wrong end of our 30’s.
Have you had other previous members? Vulfolaic: No. Lykormas and I are the original members of the band. Haistulf joined the band as a live drummer and also performed on our third album.
Did you make music even when you were young? Vulfolaic: Yes. I was forced to play instruments I didn’t like in school and really got into music when I got a guitar as a teenager.
Where are you from? Vulfolaic: Two thirds of the band live in Limburg.
What year did the band form? Vulfolaic: If I can believe Metal Archives, Entartung was born in 2011.
What's your style of genre? Vulfolaic: Black metal.
What inspires you? Vulfolaic: Nature, literature, philosophy, history, …
How often and where do you reherse? Vulfolaic: We only rehearsed a couple of times for one concert we did in 2015, deep in the musky basement of Haistulf.
How have you developed since you started with the music? Vulfolaic: Absolutely. Tastes have grown and matured, abilities have been enhanced.
Do you have other interests of work outside the band? Vulfolaic: Very much so. I’m interested and involved in graphic design, but also travel a lot and try to invest the necessary time in staying in shape.
Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? Vulfolaic: We are not looking for a booking agency. We like to keep things in our own hands and don’t like to rely on other people.
Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? Vulfolaic: No, we signed a deal with W.T.C. for our first album and remained with them ever since.
What made you decide to make this music? Lykormas: Passion for the darker genre and psyche.
What are your songs about? Vulfolaic: Lots of different things. It’s hard to find a general theme for them, but let’s just say that none of our lyrics are something a regular airhead in the street would be interested in.
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? Vulfolaic: Lykormas writes all the music, I write all the lyrics. We sometimes wander over in each other’s territory, but that is the general agreement.
Do you start with the music or the lyrics? Vulfolaic: All the music comes first. When Lykormas presents me with a new piece of music, I try to find a lyrical theme that has a compatible atmosphere.
Do you compose in a certain environment? Lykormas: Most the time I make basic music lines in my head. When there's time I record the ideas at my computer.
Have you done any covers live? Vulfolaic: No, we have plenty of own material.
What language do you sing in? Vulfolaic: A number of various languages. German, English, French, Latin, Spanish and Swedish … eftersom vi snackar svenska, vet du?
What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? Vulfolaic: We did only one official gig in Rotterdam, Holland. That venue had an attendance capacity of 400 people.
What ages are most of your concert attendants? Vulfolaic: No idea.
What was your first gig like? Vulfolaic: Hot.
When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? Vulfolaic: Our record label issued CD’s, LP’s and t-shirts.
Where can people buy your merchandise? Vulfolaic: Online.
What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? Vulfolaic: I understand that people want to have something for free instead of having to pay for it, so I’m not judging. I’m still buying music like I did when I was 15, though.
How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? Vulfolaic: It’s collapsing, like the rest of the economy probably will in the coming decades.
What do you think of my work? Vulfolaic: Suverän! Jag är säker på att många tjejer är kär i dig och skickar dig olämpliga förslag, precis som oss.
How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? Vulfolaic: My general philosophy in life is to have very low expectations.
Do you have any role models or idols? Vulfolaic: Not anymore, no.
Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? Vulfolaic: Older bands, for sure.
What have been your biggest obstacles? Vulfolaic: None, we thrive on adversity.
What advice would you give other bands or artists? Vulfolaic: Find another hobby and/or travel to a beautiful country like Syria or Eritrea.
How do you get psyched for a gig? Vulfolaic: I’m too old and have played too many gigs to get psyched for a gig. I try to be prepared as good as I can and give all I have on stage.
Do you have any new material? Vulfolaic: Yes, we just recorded a new album.
What are your web sites? Vulfolaic: We don’t have a website. We only have a half assed Facebook page.
How can people reach you? Vulfolaic: I guess Facebook is an option, but we are not interested in corresponding with other people. We say what we have to say through our music.
What are your plans for the future? Vulfolaic: We plan on focusing on other musical projects for the next year or two. Then we might decide to do another Entartung album or not.
Do you have something to add? Vulfolaic: Världen måste brinna!
