interview with CROSSOVER

Have any of you played in other bands?
Hails! CROSSOVER has been our main creative output for the past 18 years.
The only other band that I (Canrith) have been a part of that I feel is worth the mention is
one that I played drums in called Mystic Services circa 1989. It was a Dark Punk/Death Rock/Black Metal-esque
project from the mountains of New Hampshire, US. We would have debaucherous rehearsals in a shed in the woods
which would always end in a fiery, knife throwing, drunken mess. The practice space would get torn to shreds and
the members would always be vomiting in the snow under the moonlight. I just recently found the 4 song demo tape
in the attic.
How is it that you started playing music? Music, Art and Magic have been the focus since we crawled our way out of the womb.
What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you?
Canrith Knox: Drums, Synths, vocals, effects, smoke and chains.
Criss Knox: Synths, Vocals, Effects, leather and lace.
We are timeless...
Have you had other previous members? Yes, but they have gone on to pursue other passions. Also due to ideological and musical differences.
Did you make music even when you were young? We have both been making music since the beginning of time.
Where are you from? We now live hidden in the trees near the ocean in the northeast US.
What year did the band form? CROSSOVER was founded in New York City, 1998. We are nomadic by nature and have lived in most major cities in the US and in Berlin, Germany for a spell.
What's your style of genre? CROSSOVER is Cozmik. We call it Darkbeat. It has synthesized elements as well as organic ones.
What inspires you? Music, Art, Nature, Magic, Sex, Satan.
How often and where do you reherse?
I would like to say everyday but, not as much as we would want. Yet, we live and breathe this so if we are not
rehearsing or recording, we are being and becoming, creating in other ways for the band. We make many cult items
including; LP's, Tapes, CD's, DVD's, VHS, Zines, Clothing, Patches, Pins, Perfume, Jewelry etc... We spend a lot of
time making things for our supporters and packing orders. All of it is made and shipped from the Eagles Nest.
How have you developed since you started with the music?
We are ever changing and evolving while staying true to our concept and goal. Drum machines and Synthesizers
have always been our medium. There are no limits or restrictions to
what we do. We do what the fuck we want and truly don't give a fuck. Though this shouldn't be confused with any bitterness.
Making music and art tailored for any audience is, in our opinion a very bad premise to begin with.
We think it is best to do what you feel and what moves you, not to emulate. Ultimately striving to make something new.
The music we are working on now is more stripped down, ritualistic and raw - using only analog instruments.
We always try and push ourselves, ideas and sound into new realms.
Do you have other interests of work outside the band? No.
Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? We prefer to do everything ourselves.
Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? We prefer to do everything ourselves.
What made you decide to make this music? This music decided to make us.
What are your songs about? Other wordily themes, the unknown and the other-side. Mystery and Melancholy. Tears and the Rain.
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? Canrith & Criss Knox.
Do you start with the music or the lyrics? Every step is an experiment. We try every and all ways.
Do you compose in a certain inviroment? Always in our ritual chamber at the Eagles Nest.
Have you done any covers live? Never.
What language do you sing in? English and our own secret tongue.
What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? 1 and 5000.
What ages are most of your concert attendants? 20-60.
Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? We have made 6 albums plus and usually focus on the most recent material but, try and perform a couple of songs from each album.
Do you have a regular place you play live often? Europe.
What was your first gig like? It was in Berlin,  packed house, and it ruled.
What was your latest gig? We haven't performed in a long time by choice but will be returning to the stage this year.
Have you had to cancel a gig? Never.
Where do you plan to gig the comming year? Europe.
When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? See above.*
Where can people buy your merchandise?

What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? I think in 20 years it will be very hard for someone to find an obscure computer file as opposed to searching and digging for an actual artifact to have and hold. Computer files are heartless. The wanting and the hunting is often times more fulfilling than the thing itself.
How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? It is uncharted territory. Anything goes. We were able to see the tail end of the old way and watched it slowly crumble. It's for the better. Tru$t no one. No company has your best interest in mind nor is looking out for your artistic integrity or vision. We have been around the block many times and have seen every trick in the book. The music business is the sleaziest of them all. We speak from experience.
What do you think of my work? Dunno, would have to do a little more research.
How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? We don't care about the music business or quite honestly what anyone thinks of us. But if one relates to our music and art then they are one of us in a way. We are loners and our music usually finds those cut from a similar cloth.
Do you have any role models or idols? No. Only ourselves.
Why do you think that they exist? They don't. One should think for themselves, break the rules and find their own way in life. We create our own reality and choose to live outside of established "laws".
Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? Being inspired comes easy to us. There is not enough time in a day. No rest for the wicked. What we listen to and make are two different worlds completely.
What have been your biggest obstacles? Without struggle there would be no real art. It's usually other humans that get in the way. The answer to the question, honestly is a very long one. There are many secrets surrounding this band that one day I will tell. I will save that for another time.
What advice would you give other bands or artists? Do it yourselves.
How do you get psyched for a gig? A beer, a smoke, a black candle.
Do you have any new material?
Yes, we are working on a new album now. You will see a series of experimental releases and formats from us very soon.
We just released the GLOOM.MOVIE on Limited VHS that comes with a Symbol Pendant, Screened Patch, Metal Pin, Poster and a signed corresponding card. Soon we will be offering the Funeral Flowers.Film on VHS by Funeral Home Video.
