interview with Parasitic Ejaculation

Have any of you played in other bands? Yes! Jonathan, Parker, and Donovan all used to play in a Hardcore band called Ecophagy. I (Josh) used to play in Nephrectomy. And Mike used to play in Immaculate Fatality and Halo of Gunfire. Jonathan, Parker, Donovan, and I are also all currently in an easycore band called Rest When You're Dead.
What are your names? / Who plays what? I am Josh; I play bass. Mike and Parker both play guitar, Donovan plays drums, and Jonathan is the vocalist.
Have you had other previous members? Yes we have. The founding lineup was Donovan, Jonathan, Evan, and Emily. Emily left after a few months or so, and I joined in her position. Evan left about a year later, and Mike joined in his position.
Did you make music even when you were young? Most of us have been playing since we were younger, yeah.
Where are you from? Mike is from Santa Barbara, CA. The rest of us are all from Santa Cruz, CA.
What year did the band form? We formed in the summer of 2011.
What's your style of genre? Slam.
What inspires you? Slams. Specifically, slam bands that don't stick to formulas and aren't afraid to let their influences show in their music. Slam-inspired slam is monotonous. But that is just my individual opinion and what inspires me to write. I'm sure some of us agree with my opinion, but I can't speak for everyone.
How often and where do you reherse? Lately we don't rehearse as an entire group very often. A few of us have relocated and are too far apart to practice as much as we used to. So for now we mostly practice individually and maybe as a group once or twice before a show or tour.
How have you developed since you started with the music? I feel we have developed many skills as musicians since forming this band. We have been together for a little less than 5 years now, and I think our song-writing has improved, as well as our technicality and synchronicity in live performances.
What are your songs about? Originally our lyrics centered only around gore and depravity. But with our second album, Echoes of Depravity, we centered around a theme of psychopathology.
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? All of us write the music (besides Jonathan). Sometimes we write alone, and sometimes we write together. Historically Jonathan and Josh have written the bulk of the lyrics together, sometimes with the help of other members. But this time around, for our upcoming third album, Jonathan is writing all the lyrics.
Have you done any covers live? When we first started playing shows, we were covering The Stench of Her Burning Flesh by Short Bus Pile Up. We have also covered Hatebreed, Cock and Ball Torture, and possibly some other bands that I am forgetting. We actually still play the Hatebreed cover, as it took the band a while to convince me to play it.
What was your first gig like? Awkward as hell! But the crowd was supportive, and we had family there. It was actually a great first show. We made some connections that night that proved to be very important to us.
Where do you plan to gig the comming year? We are doing an east coast tour in the US this June, and we hope to do another tour in the winter, who knows where. We really want to go to Asia.
Where can people buy your merchandise? Right here! http://www.parasiticejaculation.bigcartel.com And also at a show!
What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? Honestly, I don't think any of us are bothered by the fact that people download our music for free. The people who buy CDs are still gonna buy CDs. I don't think that's ever gonna change. And people who don't buy CDs might buy a t-shirt, you never know. You don't make money playing slam anyway lol.
Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? I am personally inspired by old and new bands! New bands that push the envelope of their genre really inspire me to be creative with my writing. And it is always helpful to get inspiration from older music in order to remember the rudimentary aspects of the genre. Also, some older bands are more creative than the newer ones! So really it just depends on what bands you're talking about.
What have been your biggest obstacles? Money and time are the big ones. We have to decline tour and show offers every so often due to our busy schedules and lack of funds. But it hasn't stopped us from growing as a band and reaching new audiences. It just takes longer than if we were rich as fuck and not in school trying to be successful.
Do you have any new material?
That songs is a part of a split with Disfigurement of Flesh that will be out soon on vinyl and CD. We are also currently recording for our third full-length album that we hope will be out this year.
