interview with Havenhurst
Have any of you played in other bands? Yes, Chuck used to play in Fifty Stars Anger, Set it Back, Tightrope and Dying River. Dimitri used to play in Dark Mare, Neap Tides and MagicJack. John used to play in First Impressions and Dying River.
How is it that you started playing music? Dimitri met Chuck while he was touring in France with Tightrope. A few months after, Dimitri moved to Canada while John and Chuck were playing together in Dying River and were looking for something heavier. That’s about when Chuck introduced John to Dimitri and then we just started the band!
What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you?
Charles (Chuck) Morency plays the drums, does the backing vocals and is 37.
John Fraser-Landry plays the guitar, does the backing vocals and is 39.
Dimitri plays the guitar and does the main vocals and is 34.
And we’re looking for a new bass player! So we’re only a 3-piece for the moment.
Have you had other previous members? Yes. Frank (guitar player in Death by Dingo) played the bass with us at the beginning, we released our first demo with him. Then he left, and Donavan (bass player in Argument) joined the band as a part-time member to play the bass when we play shows. He still gives us a helping hand when we need him, but we’re actively looking for a full-time bass player.
Did you make music even when you were young? Yes, we all started playing music when we were teens and formed some bands with friends.
Where are you from? Chuck and John are from Quebec, Canada. Dimitri is from France.
What year did the band form? In 2013’
What's your style of genre? I would say that we play a mix between punk-rock, hardcore and metal.
What inspires you? Musically speaking, we all have different and common tastes. Chuck is mostly inspired by hardcore bands, John by punk-rock and metal, and Dimitri by pretty much everything (from punk to jazz to metal).
How often and where do you rehearse?
We jam at Cité 2000, it’s a big place with a lot of studios. May heavy bands from Montreal rehearse there.
We only jam once a week for the moment, like 4 to 8 hour jams! But we plan on jamming twice a week when our schedules get more flexible.
How have you developed since you started with the music? We used to be more punk-rock when we started playing. Over the years, we got heavier, at first more metal and now more hardcore.
Do you have other interests of work outside the band? John does some photography. And the other two just work and play music!
Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? We all have some kinds of obligations, so we can’t really tour. So we look more for good opportunities. So that’s why we’ve never really discussed about it.
Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? We’re not really looking for a label, but we’re always open to offers I guess.
What made you decide to make this music? I guess we all have a past laden with negative feelings and thoughts, but we’ve changed and we’ve certainly realized that music is the best healing process.
What are your songs about? Our songs talk about different life experiences. It sometimes comes from a negative thought or feeling, but the aim of each song is to find the positive aspect in all these experiences.
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? Dimitri writes the lyrics and we all compose together. Usually Dimitri or John will come up with a few ideas and we’ll build the song all of us 3.
Do you start with the music or the lyrics? We always start with the music.
Do you compose in a certain environment? As long as we have beers, we should be fine!
What language do you sing in? We sing in English. We might make one song in French someday.
What ages are most of your concert attendants? In their 30’s usually
Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? We always try to play new stuff, so we vary in a way that there’s songs we’ll never play anymore on stage.
Do you have a regular place you play live often? I would say Montreal in general!
What was your first gig like? A great show at the TRH-Bar with our friends from Set it Back for their album release.
What was your latest gig? Our last show was at l’Hémisphère Gauche with Public Outsiders. It was a great show!
Have you had to cancel a gig?
No We’ve been 3 twice. Once with no bass player and once without John (at a festival)
Where have you played live this year? We haven’t played anywhere yet this year, but we’re having a show on July, 15th at Barfly. It’s a free show with great hardcore bands.
Where do you plan to gig the comming year? We’d like to play more festivals mostly, we’ve played two so far, the Desbouleaux Fest and The Music4Cancer festival with Bigwig headlining. We’ll try to play the Pouzzafest next year.
When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? We’ve just made T-shirts so far. It’s the cover from our first demo. And you can always buy our music if you like it (or get it for free).
Where can people buy your merchandise? People can buy our music on bandcamp (havenhurst.bandcamp.com) and if they want a T-shirt, they can contact us directly on our Facebook page.
What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records nowadays? There’s so much music I like that it would be impossible for me to buy all of it. I think it’s ok that people download music for free instead of paying for it. As for myself, I think it’s important to support local bands or DIY bands (or just awesome ones!). As long as people enjoy music, I’m fine with that!
How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? Now bands have to adapt themselves to this new era. Look at Metallica, all the huge promotion they did for their new album. I guess that’s what it takes nowadays. More creativity!
What do you think of my work? I think it’s great that people are involved in promoting bands. You do a great job!
How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? I guess it can help us be heard and enjoyed by more people, so it’s always great.
Do you have any role models or idols? No. I guess we used to have role models in the punk rock scene when we were teens, which was a good thing back then I guess.
Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? It depends, we are all influenced by different bands. And I guess both old and new bands inspire us as much.
What have been your biggest obstacles? To find a bass player ahah!
What advice would you give other bands or artists? Always have fun!
Do you have any new material? We will release an EP soon, but we’re still working on it for the moment.
What are your web sites? You can check us out on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/havenhurstband/ and on bandcamp: https://havenhurst.bandcamp.com/
How can people reach you? Through Facebook Messenger is the easiest way
What are your plans for the future? Write more songs, release more stuff, play more gigs, and still have as much fun!
Do you have something to add? Thank you for your time!
